Default Help Deciding On a Caliber for a New Build

I have a Rem 700 LA donor action from a 7mm Mag that I'm sending to Pac-Nor for a rebarrel. I'm having a hard time deciding what caliber to chamber the new barrel in. If you were in this situation, what caliber would you choose based off the current action/bolt face? The rifle will be used primarily for Texas sized game hunting from box blinds.

I’m working on a 7mm Rem Mag build. I’ve done lots of research and I’d just rebarrel in the same caliber. That’s a relatively mild recoil round with good bullet selection, relatively high BC rounds, and a good velocity-to-bullet weight ratio.

With a mild recoil, I’m a much better shot. Who cares if you have a super-duper-shoulder-thumper if you compromise accuracy.

Just my thoughts, your mileage may vary.

Will you reload or be using factory?

I am a 7mm fan, and I would just stick with the 7 if it I didn't already have a 280AI. The 280AI can do almost everything the 7 mag can do but with a little less recoil.

If you reload, .300 win mag is hard to beat. You have so many options in projectile design and weight. I'd do a 1-10 twist so you can shoot heavies if you want at longer ranges. I have not had issues running lighter weight projectiles with a 10 twist.

Update:
since you have a 280AI (excellent cartridge) you might as well go to something different, i.e. 30 cal.

I too love 7mm so since you already have a 280ai I would build a 28 Nosler. It’s the granddaddy of all 7mm cartridges IMHO.

My plan is to send my action to Pac-Nor to have it trued and re-barreled. With the new barreled action would it be a drop in fit for an AG composites stock with a matching barrel channel, or will it need to be bedded etc.?

If you are having Pac-Nor do the re-barrel it would be worth taking those exact specs and making sure with AG that it will fit.

Regardless of stock choice you will still want to get it bedded. A Manners stock with mini-chassis would be the only choice that I would not bed immediately.

Since you have a .280AI already, then 6.5 PRC.

Is the 6.5prc that much better than the creedmoor? I have a creedmoor also.

Definitely needs to be pillar and glass bedded for 100% contact and optimum accuracy. Call Chris at PN as they can take care of you

257wby for sure...cartridge choice is going to be a magnum bolt face.

I'm not familiar with the 6.5PRC, is it a magnum??

1 had them do a 308 Norma mag. for me, I got the same velocity as a 300 WM in a bit shorter case with a longer neck. It would shoot 1/2 MOA groups.
