Default Wyoming state land bighorn

Finally put it together on my sheep hunt. Had access to some landlocked state land and the sheep finally cooperated. Saw a group of rams last Sunday near the parcel and today they were where we could get on them.

A parcel of land locked state land about 1 1/2 miles from the highway. Steep and rugged though, my knees are a hurtin'. Packed him down the ridge and a draw about 1/2 mile to the atv.
A view looking North and South down the same draw. North view was taken last weekend before the snow.

Thanks all ! This was a frustrating hunt in some aspects. I had access to some land locked state and BLM lands to hunt along with a large WHMA across the highway. Also a landowner over in elk area 7 grants trespass fee access to public lands and I had it, anyone with an area 7 tag can get elk access to landlocked public as well.
The ranch we work for has many sheep but the owners wife says no sheep hunting.
These rams finally went where we could hunt them.
The stalk wasn't hard but the pack down was steep and granite gravel for walking. Sore feet and legs today.

I made a 75 yard offhand shot as the rams were bedded and only got up when I moved in. He gave me the Texas Heart shot and I hit him hard but no reaction. I fired again and missed as they went away. After a bad decision to go look where we thought they went, no sheep, we backtracked to the shot spot and found blood. Followed it around and he had circled back to about 100 yards from his bed, died on the ridge right below his bed.
I can't even describe the feeling of knowing you hit a sheep and not initially finding him. When the blood trail picked up he was bleeding good.
The bullet entered his backside off to the right a tad and traveled full body , we found it just under the skin at the chest . They are impressive animals on the ground, deep chested but the quarters are not huge. His head and cape were heavier than any quarter, I'll weigh it today.

Our whole hunting season was centered around my sheep tag so now on to deer and cow elk, whitetails too.

Wyoming has some great areas for DIY sheep hunting, some are very rugged but we have some great areas that can be hunted on foot. Anyone with max sheep PP could draw a DIY area and take a great ram without paying an outfitter and saving $10,000. That is how much one local outfitter charges on the adjacent property to where I took mine.

I'm past my prime, I think, but I've decided to buy my youngest a lot every year in Wyoming. That way if he wants to hunt there he won't be behind the 8 ball. If I'm gonna hunt goats I'll have to look at Canada or Alaska guided.

I'll be curious how that sheep tastes and send a picture of the end product on the mount.

Congrats again. Have you gotten your pronghorn yet?

Cow elk, mule deer, whitetail, pronghorn buck and doe. Going to do some trapping and coyote hunting as well this winter. Always, now, on the lookout for a wolf on the ranch we work for.
Spouse has general elk, cow elk, whitetail, mule deer and pronghorn buck and doe as well.

I rough scored the ram at 176 6/8. He has great mass and was aged at 6 1/2 years.

What a ram! Awesome tags and all the hunting you get to do up there.

In general, can you share if you mostly hunt the whitetail on private or public?

We have some private access but also can hunt the NF east of Laramie and some scattered parcels in Sybille Canyon area. It is an additional tag and for specific areas, we have seen some bucks on the ranch we work for so that's why we put in.

Went pronghorn hunting yesterday and this morning, over near Saratoga, Wy. Public land and bucks are hard to find right now but winter is coming and will push some more into the area. Found 2 mature bucks, mine goes 13 + and the spouses pushes 14 inches.
Notice the weather change from pone day to the next.
