Only saw 2 nilgais, and took a cow in north unit 5 on Sat night 222 lbs. The federal game wardens will only come pick u up at the road after the evening hunts as long as the road is DRY and drivable. Our wardens were super cool. They picked us up twice (once on Fri night and again on Sat night) and waited a long time for us to get there. Totally recommend doing this hunt with a group. They stated they wont drive out during the day. I'll try to load a few picks. Met some really cool guys that posted earlier (Texas Ag), this is a great community of hunters and appreciate all the tips. I was up in north island point. U really need to push them to come out from being bedded down (how I saw the beautiful bull, which I wasn't prepared to fire at, but a better hunter could have got a good shot off).
StickyG, myself with our buddies and the game wardens. Both wardens were really helpful and saved us some miles both nights.

Congrats on the cow! Itís definitely a tough hunt late season and anything killed is usually a trophy to talk about.

No exception, all game must be checked. It’s the hide they really want to check for ticks, mine just happen to already be off the animal when I got to the check station. If you want to keep the hide it must be frozen for 24 hours before released. Regardless of if you want to keep though they want you to pack out the hide one way or another to be checked which was a PITA for me cause I didn’t have any interest in the hide. I just wanted the horns and skull so I skinned out the head while there so I could leave with it right away and not have to wait the 24 hours.

I shot that cow on the December 1-5th Hunt. She fed in to me perfect at 30 yards, wind in my favor and all, she knew something wasn’t right and trotted out to 60. I took a moving shot and led her too far. That’s what my solid broadhead did to her neck. I trailed her over half a mile, my pants and snake guards were covered in blood from the tall grass. Tough animals!!!

Glad you got her!!

Noticed your a Perez too! Ha ha
That’s funny!

Yeah I was thinking it may have been a Bowhunter possibly taking a facing shot and shot high and grazed the side of her neck. Pretty cool to hear the story behind it though. I was actually wondering about it when I saw it. What unit did you try taking her in?

If you go down Bobcat road and stay straight instead of taking the first big curve to the right, I was all the way down where the dead end curls back in that open area. Not sure on the unit.

Bottom of 8 or top of 2, not sure on the delineation on the map.

I shot her off west lake road down at the south end of 2. I know those animals are a lot tougher than most people know and that goes to prove iit.

I had shot mine from an elevated position a ways away and the bullet went straight thru her heart... but it messed up some of the back strap near entry part, but did not affect either shoulder. I found the round, it was stuck in the opposite side of her hide behind her shoulder. She dropped right there but was kicking around and trying to get up. As I approached I was afraid she was gonna jump up and run, so I shot her in the head like twice. But she still didn't die. I had to shoot her again when directly over her. I wanted to end her suffering as soon as I could. She was remarkably tough and even the heart shot she was still moving around for like 15 mins. I would load a photo of her on the game cart, but I can't figure out how to post pics.

In your email where you got the permit there is another attachment. It will list orientation time. Usually the day before the hunt at 9am at Laguna Atacosa Hunter Check Station.

My orientation was in town...not at the check station. if in doubt...call the manager and ask for clarification.

It was at the hunter check station for the rifle hunt and the community center in Los Fresno's for the archery hunt

I am here and so far I didn't see anyone in the area I am set up in yesterday or this morning. Definitely alot different than the archery hunt in December. We have heavy fog this morning with very limited visibility, hope that dissipates soon. No matter what, it is still better than being at work!

Well the good news is that I saw some Nilgai this evening, one looked like a young bull and the other was a big blue bull! The bad news is that it was long shot and I completely missed it. The adrenaline got the best of me this time, I should have waited to see if they came in closer. I sure hope I get another chance as one this weekend. Feeling pretty disappointed in myself right now.

I saw a nice cow late morning but walking away from me at about a quarter mile. Could not catch it. Also about 7 nice size alligators sunning themselves along pond on east side of access road.

Well i saw my first nilgai ever and killed it today. I shot a cow that weighed 195 after she was gutted. Having a great time out here with great people. We cooked up some heart tacos tonight.

I think those were the only 2 shot Robert. Did not check the board when I left Sunday. I talked to the lady late Saturday. Most everyone were out of there Sunday at noon. Wonder why? haha I saw some cows but out of my range.

There were 4 total harvested. I got out too late Sunday to be able to check the board myself as the gate was closed. I texted the check station and they replied with 4.

I saw some cows running by on Saturday night but could not get a shot. Something had them spoooked.

Was a fun hunt and met some good people. Robert was kind enough to share some of the nilgai meat wealth on top of the heart tacos. I did have to pull a tick from a precarious spot during the Saturday morning hunt and we walked right up on this guy.

I would love to see it, but chances aren't very good considering the low kill rate. I think they prefer the helicopter hunting because they don't like dealing with us

At the orientation I was thinking at what point in life do I become an adult? When I talked
to personnel out in the field everyone was nice though. I get the idea that they feel they are babysitting us.

Hunted there the last 2 years. Never felt like that at all. The wardens and volunteers have been more than wonderful. And not canceling the hunt during the shutdown speaks volume.

After I heard the questions that were asked after our orientation I was questioning if there were any adults in the room.

I thought the folks running the operation were great.

We did not have many questions. Perhaps by the last hunt which I was in, patience had changed. Like I said, out in the field they were great.

Considering the attitude of several people in attendance at my hunt they DO have to babysit to the lowest denominator.

The dude who wanted to wave his hangdown around and argue with the Rangers over his definition of a "motorized vehicle" for instance... I really hope he screwed up and got ticketed for something.
