I've always heard about how painful gout is - including on threads here - but luckily never had it. A couple weeks ago I developed a stress fracture in the joint of my second toe. It has happened before and it healed after wearing a walking boot for a week or two. This time, after a few days it swelled up and at night felt like it was on fire. Went to the doc today and he said the inflammation from a fracture can cause uric crystals to collect in the joint, thus the gout. I can't imagine having this as a chronic condition. I have a pretty high pain threshold, but wow!

My first flare up I was in Saskatchewan bear hunting. I got it in my ankle and you talk about bad, I was miserable. We were 200 miles from any hospital and all we had was some Aleve for pain. Spent 3 days of the 6 day trip laid up, then a 14hr drive, THEN a plane trip back home to Texas. I have had a few since then but take Allopurinol every day and have kept it at bay for years. It is NO JOKE.

I had a chronic case in my knees for several years. I finally had one knee replaced, the other scoped and cleaned up....and started taking allipurinol daily.
It has been smooth sailing since then, I can also eat or drink pretty much anything.
