I just built a 16" carbon barrel 308 to run suppressed as my thermal rig. Most of my shots are within 300 yards with the occasional longer shot and I got tired of dragging around 14lb ARs with 24" suppressed barrels.
Just starting load development with 165gr Barnes TSX's behind Varget and RL15 and 175 Barnes LRX's behind CFE223. Unless I can break 2500-2550 with the 175's the extra weight/BC don't have any advantage over lighter bullets and I will drop back to 150's/165's.
Try power pro 2200mr I get 2750 fps average with a 20" barrel and 168gr bullets
Have a 16" handi rifle in 308. Definitely increases noise but it sure is compact. Its dropped a number of heavy bucks with the factory federal 150 grain fusion.

Something to consider is baffle erosion on the shorter barrels.
It is my understanding that on quality rifle cans (17-4, stellite, etc) erosion only really starts happening once the can in hot. Meaning you get almost zero erosion on the first shot or 2.
