Pipeline crossing a hilly area. Would like to make it more level by adding fill from an outside source. Will the pipeline company care?

If you call them and ask them if they care you bet your *** they will. If you just haul in fill dirt without saying anything and make your crossing more level, no one will say a word.Last edited by CabezaBlanca; 03-28-2020, 05:54 PM.

Forgot to add that its a larger pipeline and theres a cathodic protection unit nearby that they check regularly, so it would be seen. Im more of an ask forgiveness type but could be looking at significant elevation adjustments. Maybe 500-1000+ yards of fill. The cathodic stuff is on top of a hill so no work would be within 200' of it.

This ^^^^ is what I’d be worried about. If there was ever a problem with that pipe under your dirt, that could be big trouble for ya.

How much cover are you talking about adding? How much cover is there currently? What equipment are you going to use to fill in the area? Generally pipeline companies like more cover unless its so much it will hinder any future excavation for repair or maintenance. Example would be if the line is only 2 or 3 feet deep and you want to add 2 feet of cover making the new depth of cover 5 feet the pipeline company would love you to add it, but would like to work with you on wheel load calculations on the equipment you will use to add the cover. Now if the line is already 5 or 6 feet deep and you are wanting to add another 5 or 10 feet they might frown on that as now getting back to the pipe will be costly and more dangerous.

Call 811 and put in a one call with a description of the work you’re wanting to do. Include gps coordinates. The one call system will send a notification to any utilities that are in the area. The pipeline company will contact you to discuss the work and determine if they need to be on site while the work is taking place. Request the positive response method which requires them to contact you. That will give you a legal paper trail that will protect you if there were ever any problems.
