    Electrical help

I bought an upright craftsman air compressor but it’s tripping my breaker. I had a 15 amp outlet and changed it to a 20 amp outlet and it flips the 20 amp breaker 1 out of 3 times. The compressor calls for a 15 amp 110 volt.

Do I need to run a designated 20 amp outlet for it with 10/2 wire? Or upgrade my breaker to 30 amp?

    Thanks

What wire do you have? Did you try a different outlet (on different breaker)?

How much is on the same circuit?

12/2. Yes I have 2 sets of outlets with 6 outlets on each run. They all tripped but they are 15 amp.

Obviously too much draw on that circuit. Don’t go to 30 amp breaker unless your current wire is 10/2. If it was a 15 amp circuit before it’s probably 12/2 wire. If you’ve got room in your panel for an additional 20 amp breaker, just make you a short drop with a plug box and plug in and see if it works. If no problems then you can add a dedicated circuit just for that piece of equipment. Plus this will tell you if it’s a motor issue instead of an electrical issue.

Is it a oil less compressor?

Nothing else on the circuit. Yes, it’s an oil less model.

That's odd. Even with 14ga wire I'd think it would be good

Maybe a loose connection in that circuit.

                      Good question.

No gfci. Nothing loose either. I’m stumped

Do you have a meter that will read current (amps)?
If not, move that circuit to another breaker and see if it does the same thing.

Is the cover loose? Under the cover it has this set up. If the cover is loose the contracts doesn't make proper contact. I hope this helps.

Next thing to do is put an amp meter on it and see how much current it is drawing.
