No game warden and the poachers know it

Neighbor ranchers chased a guy they caught spotlighting on their ranch. Ended up being a high speed chase down gravel roads. Nobody could alert me that they were chasing him through our ranch. I don’t get cell phone service in the house, which can be bad for me. They ended up having to break off the chase. Couldn’t catch up to him. What’s really strange is that the same suspected poacher was in town this morning at the same place we were all buying breakfast from. He overheard our conversation about last night’s events and immediately left as fast as possible. Word is out that there’s no game warden. Haven't heard if the GW quit or what.

I heard shots the other night, but didn’t go to investigate. Just thought it was further away on somebody else’s land. Could’ve been the same poacher. Due to the crazies out here it’s especially not wise to go out alone when confronting a trespasser at night. I’ll wait and get help from sheriff deputies.

Yes wardens to get transferred/retire/quit from time to time, but I am pretty sure one of the surrounding county GW's is assigned to fill in on major cases until a full time replacement is brought in.

If you know who is poaching, and have high speed chases going through you ranch - I'm pretty sure TPWD would like to hear about it.

Not sure why a poacher or landowner would think a game warden is limited by county, I've been night hunting varmints 40+ years, have had plenty of game checks by my resident warden and his neighbors too. Wardens are like any other po-po, they'll be hanging out where somethings is reported or where illegal activity is historically likely to happen. Make a call to tpwd or the SO somebody will show up.

When warden Darnell Crist took another job back around 2011, Madison County got plum stupid for a while. Then I got stupider and people stopped coming on our land to fish and hunt. You make a couple of different guys think that they are running for their life to the front gate that is 2 miles away, confiscate a new Dodge dually pickup, confiscate a couple of rifles (one was one guy's family heirloom) and do this on more than one occasion....word will get around and people will find an easier target.




In full disclosure, everything I confiscated was returned to the offenders thru either the Sheriff's Dept, the parents in one case, and a mutual acquaintance in another.

Erath county, Stephenville is the county seat. Earth is in the panhandle. Usually called Spring Lake - Earth.

That stinks the GWs are not around. Our dudes are crawlin around all the time. They are awesome to work and visit with.

Yep, Denton county game warden came to Cooke and investigated when a dude came out in the field I was hunting and started shooting at an illegal deer after dark also spraying bullets in my direction. He ran when I hollered because I didn't want to get shot. GW spent hours out there looking around for clues as to who it was. I was impressed.

Our ranch has never been visited on 35 years.
My leases have only been visited once in 55 years
We would welcome them as we follow rancher’s rules anyway.

This brought back some memories about a GW I got to know pretty well many years past in Sterling County. Gene Posey was a very good and personable GW and I'm sure he has passed as it's been a lot of water under the bridge since then.

I've never established any contact with the GW's in the Robert Lee area, in fact never even been checked for a long time. One thing I do know, from experience these Men and Women do it "alone" the majority of their time in the field and have my utmost respect. Like many, I always had at least "some" backup within a short time if I needed it, but it's a very dangerous job as we all can assume.

As a side note, the author CJ Box and the Joe Pickett series of novels focuses on a GW in Wyoming, great reads IMO...fiction novels.
