Makes no sense. Unless using him in a JT trade.

It makes sense not going into the season with only Stassi and Stubbs. Chirinos swings a decent bat and is considered a good clubhouse guy and game caller. Not very good at limiting the run game or pitch framing.

I wouldn't be surprised if he is the opening day catcher or Stassi's back up. I would be surprised if he was the #1 catcher for a playoff series.

I also wouldn't be surprised if they sign or trade for a different catcher between now and opening day.

Chirinos has no value in a JTR trade.

The Astros are patient. JTR's price has nowhere to go but down. Grandal is likely to get a really big contract that they don't want to take on with guys like Springer, Correa, Verlander, and Cole nearing free agency.

There will be a good defensive catcher available at the deadline that they can pick up for minimal prospect cost if they need one.

One of the knocks on Chirino is the lower scoring defensive metrics. However, a portion of those depend on the pitcher, as well as the catchers ability. Given that Chirino handled a sub-par pitching staff with the Rangers, and the Astros current pitchers are far superior, I think we’ll end up liking Chirino. I think we’ll see a nice improvement in his defensive measurables.

Now go get Eovaldi and Goldy!

I think Astro's will be happy w/ R. Chirinos as backup catcher. I've said for years that if he's your backup catcher you've got a pretty good club. If he's the front line catcher, not so much. He's a great dude / team mate. Good enough offensively. I think he'll be good enough defensively on a good team. I agree that better pitching will help him out. Hopefully he won't be fishing 58' pitches from the likes of Matt Moore out of the ground and trying to catch runners at the same time.

i really dont sense a huge sense of urgency out of them and frankly I agree. with mariners rebuilding, angels no threat and A's losing lowry and without Manaea all season, Astros should cake walk to the division title. Focus on mid-season and trade deadline targets and its much cheaper and you avoid mortgaging your future.

I guess he came up with 30 million reasons to keep playing instead of retiring. Good pick up by the Rays.

Im a huge fan of him as a player and person, but the fact we weren't willing to give him $30MM over two years makes me think the Stros don't trust his shoulder as the performance he's demonstrated over the last two years would certainly warrant paying him that amount.

Happy cfm got paid..
Sad to see him not in htown any longer..
Hope he has success.

Dont think stros are too worried about off season grabs.. owner has stated the budget has growing room..and the late season pickups seem to be a trend they want to repeat rather than spending a wad early...

gotta think that one of the mets or indians starters will be available at the trade deadline if we need a starter because Forest not quite ready yet...

Also, there will be a team thats projected to be a playoff contender that will be under .500 midseason that we can pick up a slugger from. Craine totally committed to spending the money but in a judicious manner.

Ideally Ted will rake like he did in the minors and we will not feel compelled to look for a bat at all.

Btw a rotation of Verlander, Cole, James, McHugh, Whitley doesn't exactly stink if youre projecting post mid-season.

Biggest concerns for me are an aging Yuli and the possibility Correa's back issues are a chronic condition.

Yuli will be fine... his age is not a factor. Trust me. Thats a road not to be travelled. Ever. Old cuban will continue to rake.
Carlos back issue will be something to watch for but u can bet the off season hasnt been an off season for him...
A gun at the plate and injuries to not come all at once would be something to hope for.

I dont either. It will just be interesting if Keuchel and Morton can sustain the success with another team. Or if they will revert to what they once were.

Fairly predictable losses and not players that were likely to hit the major league roster any time soon. Both have a decent chance to stick as the Giants OF is hot garbage and the Marlins are in full tear it down mode.

Brantley maybe a stud pickup if he stays healthy. Similar plate approach to Bregman and does not swing and miss much

with the acquisition of Brantley I may finally be comfortable using Tucker in a trade for Realmuto. As fun as the hot stove season is, does anyone feel our season will come down to Correa returning to mvp contention form? I'm confident a healthy Altuve will produce, just concerned Correa's back may be a chronic issue.

Correas back will certainly be a focus point, but i have no doubt hes doin everything in his power to get right...
i dont think theres anything pointing to it being a chronic issue at this point... it was hurt..and it took time to heal.
Tuves knee will be under same scrutiny.

We'll see.

I feel like the division is weak enough that Luhnow has the luxury of building a team to win in the postseason versus having to worry about building a team to win from day one. A post season rotation of Verlander, Cole, Whitley (fingers crossed) and a top end rental pitcher would suit me just fine.

With the addition of Brantley, we have one too many outfielders. Unless they start Tucker in AAA. Or trade him. Or trade someone else. Going to be interesting for sure

Tucker will almost certainly start in AAA. He won't be up with the big club to be a fourth outfielder. When he comes up, they will want to give him everyday AB's. I seriously doubt that he gets traded even for Realmuto.

Even with Tucker in AAA, they still have one too many outfielders with Brantley, Reddick, Springer, Marisnick, and Tony Kemp. I think Kemp is out of option years and Marisnick will have the ability to refuse an assignment to AAA after a couple months service time.

So, it looks like one of those guys is going to have to go. Reddick is definitely on the block, but he is unlikely to be traded because of his contract. I think they will want to keep Marisnick for his defense and the occasional start against lefties. That leaves Kemp as the only tradeable guy with some kind of value.

Kemp isn't arbitration eligible until 2021 and is under team control through 2024. That, along with his production, makes him valuable to other clubs. I think they will exhaust all options trying to trade Reddick then possibly look to trade Kemp.

Seems like an eminently reasonable contract, but my feeling is that the Astros would rather have the roster flexibility than have someone that only has value as a DH coming out of spring training. If they need a right handed DH only bat at the trade deadline, there will likely be several available, including Cruz himself, where they can trade prospects from organizational depth (pitchers).

They will give Tyler White a chance and also have guys that can DH like Yuli. JD Davis might get a shot at DH if there are some injuries.

They also have guys down on the farm that might need MLB AB's like Tucker in the short term, Alvarez in the slightly longer term, and Beer in the slightly more long term that roster flexibility can help give those guys AB's.
