      Look on both sides of the mounting brackets. Also look on the tilt tube in front

        That one is so old the number may be hiding in plain sight....look for hieroglyphs

          There is a number stamped in a freeze plug. Foes that translate to a serial #. So far that is the only number I can find.

          Any idea of what year it might be.

            Or look for 2 little studs or rivets about an inch or so apart where someone took the tag off.

              What's the number on the freeze plug? And that's not a freezeplug. Just looks like one. Nothing under it.

                        Edit: Just ran the model number and found it is a 1966 Evinrude Lark 8 Model 40673b 40hp

                          You best hope that electric shift works. For a heads up the motor has to be running for it to shift. Default is forward and will always go into forward when you cut the motor off. It takes a different grease/oil than modern units.
