Patina on a carbon steel knife

I found a deal on a sale on some carbon steel Moraknif 511’s

I saw where people are boiling them in vinegar to put a patina on them to keep them from rusting, anyone try this? Just curious how well it works

I've soaked some in vinegar, didn't boil. Still turns them black. It helps for sure but they will still rust easily if you don't keep them dry.

Strip some copper wire with it, cut up a ribeye and sausage links. Wipe with a paper towel and put in your pocket. Works great.

Stick it in a potato for a few days.

You can stick one in a potato and it will patina the blade.

You can achieve different patinas with bloody meat, mustard, citrus, vinegar etc. if you’re really worried about rust then leave it in boiling vinegar to etch the entire blade, longer you leave it the darker it gets. but just using it and wiping it down after use gives it a lot more character!

But to answer your question - yes it does work.

Nice I will try those different types
I like that vinegar etching color
                @ $6 per knife I guess I can’t mess up

You can force a patina with salt and peroxide on the stove. Once you’ve done a few cycles, it works really well. I did a hatchet years ago and to this day it hadn’t rusted. I leave out in the barn with my camping gear so it’s had plenty of chances to rust up. So far so good. Resembles old school blueing

Any idea on the ratio of salt to peroxide? I have a old school bell my mom had I would love to put it on a pole in the yard

If I remember right I filled a pan with hydrogen peroxide and then add salt until it was fully saturated

This. X1000 use that sucker and you'll have a real patina and it'll be coated in bacon fat to keep the rust away!!
