    Chesnut/ Chinkapin Planting?

Not the oak. Anybody had luck growing them in Texas? I got some 1 year plugs from different suppliers and going to give them a try. I know my soil is right but dont know if it gets cold enough here. Some going in near Navasota and some near Somerville.

Supposedly the deer go nuts for them.

What is your yearly rainfall average at those 2 areas?

It can be done, but you have to work at it
I would not plant any chestnut smaller than a 3 gal size container

Plant them on north or east facing slopes in well drained soil

Use weed mats and mulch and cage them.....Im not a fan of tubes

Water them the first year in texas heat

You will have better luck with chinkapins.....i planted mine bare root and some bear nuts in 2 years!!!! they seem to do better in our torid summers

      good luck,

      bill

Texas is Allegheny chinkapin country not chestnut. You may be to far west even for those. They need to be on a hillside preferably on the west side of an opening is where we have had the most luck. Like others said water through the first summer.

I planted 15 Dunstan Chestnut trees a few years ago. Used mats, fencing and watered all summer. Only 1 survived and it is growing very slowly. Not sure why they didn’t do better.

It’s best to plant what would grow there naturally. Makes it a lot easier.

My neighbor has 2 'chestnuts' and they do fine in northern Houston County. Spiny, painful suckers. They produce every year. I don't know the variety. He harvests them in late September maybe early October. His trees are mature. There are some growing at the Sam Houston museum in Huntsville too.

Does anyone know where to get Allegheny at a decent price?

                              hog down

Tubes become greenhouse ovens in our torrid east texas summers and bake baby trees

They also become fire ant condos

They predispose fruit trees to fungus and bark rot

Birds can get trapped in them and die

Wasps make nests and raccoons destroy tubes in search of wasps

Other than that, they are a great product
