    Flintlock rifle build

So I’ve been asking Santa for one of these since I was 10. 36 years later and four of my own kids; Santa produced the goods.
Father son build...gets the old guy every time.

So I unboxed and skimmed the directions, familiarized with the vocabulary and started rough fitting pieces together.

    My gunsmith buddy was impressed.

Sanding commenced and the kids loved getting dusty with dad.

Not going to post sanding pics because, well, I didn’t take any.
So fast forward to adding the barrel tennons, drilling through the forend, installing sights, yeah no pics of that either.

Now we get to browning the barrel.
I ordered my solution from Track of the Wolf
Read the instructions, lightly sanded with 2000 grit and washed and degreased and applied the first coat.

Within minutes, the first coat of rust was beginning to form.

A few hours later and it is covering most of the barrel.

This morning, it was 100% scaled over.

I took the barrel and scrubbed it down with boiling water and a scotchbrite pad. And let it dry, then applied another coat of barrel brown. This will continue on through Tuesday.

After that, it’ll get scrubbed with baking soda water, cleaned and then waxed several times.

I’ll get the stock going this weekend.
I’m using aqua fortis, and am excited to see those results.
    More pics to come.

Also working on putting a deep patina on all of the brass and inlay some deer antler

I used that same stuff. I had my barrel ( all metal parts) sand blasted and then browned them. I did not use glove, and I heated the metal with a torch before applying. And man I got the worst has of hives I have ever seen. I guess you can get them internal also. But it’s to late to warn you, I see. Hope you are good !

I wear my big thick silicone bbq gloves when I mess with the barrel.

Just washed and scrubbed it down with boiling water.

Will get a daytime pic after school tomorrow.

Wax arrived for the barrel to preserve it.

Good luck! I did the same thing 40 years ago but mine was a CVA.

Nice... i've always bought completed rifles, but wanted to do a kit especially a flinter. Now I have the bug again.

I’m looking forward to seeing your antler in lay design. I have heard that the instructions can be vague at times. Have you found that to be accurate? I need a kit that is knucklehead proof!

That's enough wax to last you a life time. That stuff goes a long ways.

Had a solid coat of rust today after school.
I washed it in hot water with baking soda to neutralize anything on the barrel.
Washed again with soap and hot water.
Dried and then wiped down with barrel degreaser/cleaner and rinsed with clean water.

So that’s what we looked like. Brownish blackish and looking old. Check.

Cracked open the wax...yeah...this will last a lifetime and maybe another half [emoji23][emoji23]
Good excuse to build a few more!!!

Wax on......wax off. You can see the difference!

2 coats of many. I love how dark it got! Nowhere near perfect finish, but by golly, its black, has a cool patina, and looks old.

So the stock got boogered up and sanding didn’t get to where the root of the problem was, SOooo

Cut out part of a main beam shed with the ol’ roto-tool-of-awesome and then started sanding to fit.
It needs to be a few 8ths narrower but it ought to lay in that spot nicely. *knock on wood* but my hopes are to have it been in smoothly. We will see how that goes [emoji15]

Gotta cut out some other pieces for the forend.
Since I got a nice flat piece for the butt, I’m thinking about doing something like that with the forend as well.

Put on another coat and had to put some stuff together.

Looks like an old rusty 200 yr old barrel.
There’s definitely things I’ll do differently....work down the flats more to expose the bare metal. It’s streaky bc I didn’t do it enough.
                      Learning experience!! Heck yes.

No sir. Not quite ready yet.
Need to get the barrel pinned in and I gotta finish the stock first, then pin it.

But I’m dyin to go shoot some water jugs with it!
