Sambar

Anyone have experience with Sambar deer? We were drawn for Powderhorn WMA in January and got an email the other day about using a heavy enough caliber to put them down without having to trail them.

I was thinking of using my 30-06 before I got the email. Now I'm thinking about my 300 Wby. My BIL is thinking 7mm RM.

I would like to know if you have hunted Sambar, what did you use and how far they went. I know bullet placement is key and I put it where it needs to go.

Your 06 will be plenty. I will be on the February hunt with my 280 rem

300 blackout through both shoulders, He ran 60 yards and piled up. That’s the exit would in the picture. Any good deer rifle will do the job but you can never have too much rifle for an animal that big.

Both of those would be fine. I’ve only shot one and I used a bow and got a pass thru. Congrats on the draw, I have 20 years of points and can’t draw.

We have Sambar in the wild here in Florida. Some wealthy guy bought an island and put them on there. They’ve been self sufficient since. It’s a tag draw, off the grid no electricity and accessibility is by boat only.

They use all weapons, bow , black powder etc.

Any rifle would kill them from what I’ve seen. Accuracy ofcourse is key. If I were you I’d take my most confident shooting gun.

I’m told these things are super spooky.

A buddy of mine hunted them last year with his daughter. She killed hers with a .22-250.

They arent magic, .30-06 will be just fine. Unless you just want to use .300WM and hate your shoulder lol
