Made my kids a sand box

My little man is getting some "Earth Moving" equipment for Christmas.
    Tonka toys galore!

So I figured I give him a good sand box to play with them in.
    The dimensions are 5x6
    2x12 borders
    5/4x6 decking boards everywhere else.
    2x2 bench support/seat dividers.
Had some very thick plastic left over from the flower bed at the old house.

Framed my boarder and stapled the liner to the bottom, trimmed the edges and flipped it over.

Put in some bench supports and frame supports in each corner flush to the top.

Cut all my 5/4x6x10's in half and laid them out. The 4 smaller cuts on top will be the back supports. Get your boards all spaced out and go ahead and secure the 2 boards on each end, they'll be staying where they are.

Measure and secure your backrest boards.

Add your hinges. I used 12 but you could probably get away with 8.

Open the sand box up. Measure and cut your 2x2s for the bench support/seat dividers. They also serve to keep the back rest from falling in if the kiddo uses it to pull themselves up. So flush the boards against the backrest.

I just started getting into wood working and I'm loving every minute of it.
This wasn't very hard to build but to me it carries a pretty big wow effect.

I love the fact that it has a lid so the cats don't use it as a litter box.

Total cost was about $120 without the sand. Thinking of using pea gravel to keep the mess down a little.

    Finished product.

I like it. If you don't have a lid on it, every cat in the neighborhood will **** in it.

It is robbed from the interweb but I added a little here and there to make it mine. Probably going to add a few boxes somewhere for him to keep some things in.

The sand box is OK, but that is a good looking all american boy.

I bet he can't wait to turn 16 so he can get his dads truck stuck all the way up the the axles.

It looks really nice but I got a question how much rain do you think will get in to the sand?

I would be afraid it would not drain and stay wet a good while.

Another reason I was thinking about going with pea gravel.
Although it rained here today and it was dry when I opened it when I got home.

I do have it on a slight incline on purpose and for that reason. I figured it would run down and out between the wood and the liner. If it doesn't, I'll take a paddle bit and drill a hole staple a piece of screen to block the rocks from coming out. for it to drain.

All things I've thought about but wanted to see how it goes first.

Sounds like you got it covered. I bet he spends many of happy hours in it.

I did a similar one for my son last spring, he LOVES IT.

                        A couple things...

                        1. It will get water in it, but sand drains well. Besides, they like playing in the muddy sand too.

                        2. Take you 4 2X4s as long as you think you can drive in the ground deep. Cut one end sharp like a stake and drive them as deep as you can right against the inside of the center of the 2X12s, one on each side. THen screw the 2X12 from the outside into your stakes down close to the ground, and cut the stake off 1/2 way up the 2X12 so the stake is below the sand. Otherwise water will carry sand under your 2X12 and raise the whole thing up. THen sand runs under and it looks crappy.

                        3. Get him one of these as soon as you think he's big enough! http://www.christianbook.com/the-big...FQ2QaQodH80Hvg

                          Thanks for the heads up!
And the link! He'd love that! Wish he could operate it now, but it would probably be another year before he could grasp the concept. Though he does surprise me often! Lol
