My little man is getting some "Earth Moving" equipment for Christmas.
Tonka toys galore!
So I figured I give him a good sand box to play with them in.
The dimensions are 5x6
2x12 borders
5/4x6 decking boards everywhere else.
2x2 bench support/seat dividers.
Had some very thick plastic left over from the flower bed at the old house.
Framed my boarder and stapled the liner to the bottom, trimmed the edges and flipped it over.
Put in some bench supports and frame supports in each corner flush to the top.
Cut all my 5/4x6x10's in half and laid them out. The 4 smaller cuts on top will be the back supports. Get your boards all spaced out and go ahead and secure the 2 boards on each end, they'll be staying where they are.
Measure and secure your backrest boards.
Add your hinges. I used 12 but you could probably get away with 8.
Open the sand box up. Measure and cut your 2x2s for the bench support/seat dividers. They also serve to keep the back rest from falling in if the kiddo uses it to pull themselves up. So flush the boards against the backrest.
I just started getting into wood working and I'm loving every minute of it.
This wasn't very hard to build but to me it carries a pretty big wow effect.
I love the fact that it has a lid so the cats don't use it as a litter box.
Total cost was about $120 without the sand. Thinking of using pea gravel to keep the mess down a little.
Finished product.
