home build roof design question ?

I am trying to design a retirement house plan. looking at about a 40x50 design or so.

question for the builders...or other knowledgeable folks.

Is it cheaper/better to go with a hip roof or gable roof design?

It will include a 28x24 covered porch on the back.

thoughts?

Hips are cheaper less siding less paint. All eaves are closer to the ground cheaper to maintain in the long run.
