As I have done in years past, this post is a tribute to one of the older bucks we were fortunate enough to hold and watch throughout the years. If you're like me, you'll enjoy a history of this buck, my good friend Jimmie, named Pappy.
We first noticed him in 2016 as what I thought was a 4.5 year old. For whatever reason, I did not save any photos of him that year.
2017 as a 5.5 year old
2018 as a broken up 6.5 year old. He would go on to break something every year following.
2019 as a 7.5 year old. Jimmie named him Pappy this year.
2020 as a 8.5 year old and one of the biggest bodied bucks I have ever seen on our place, despite having gotten many deer into mature-post mature status.
I took these in early November 2020 from the House Stand through my binoculars. I really considered shooting him this day because I wanted to weigh him. Instead, I just took photos.
The season carried on and Pappy continued to be around. The last photo I saved of him was New Year's Day 2021 in the snow. Pappy survived until the Valentine's Day cold/snow took it's toll.
Anvilheadtexas found him dead in April while turkey hunting behind the House feeder along a rocky ridge that faces north. I was sad to see him go but another will take his place.
My coworker, Aggies12, was kind enough to clean up his skull for me to hang in my office. Thanks for all the memories Pappy, you had a helluva run.
