Total acres between the 2 ranches +/- 20,000 acres
Running around 60 sets half snares, half #2 sized coilspring traps
Right now dirtholes are the best producer, as the season progresses into breeding season a flat set will be more dominate.
Anyone have any contact information on any fur buyers this season! I use to send my fur to NAFA, and they still owe me money! Looking for someone to sale furs to! Thanks!!!!
Someone mentioned Groeny on another site but I don't know anything about them
When I was a kid I remember there was a guy that came around about once a month that dad sold to. Pretty sure he came to the feed store on a certain Saturday. I don't know if they still do that anywhere or not but they don't around here
Texas trappers website usually has a list of fur buyers who'll be active during the season. With price outlook this year may not be many options available.
BTL, congrats on the fine catches! Looks like you know what you are doing also. You have a good setup with the coil spring traps and in line swivels and spring. Do you stake everything or have you also used drags? While you can certainly reset most any set after a catch, sometimes its easier with a drag since they don't usually tear up the original set as bad when they can pull the drag away.
I had a friend show me some things about trapping a few years ago and he used drags.
That year I used drags and did good with the few I caught with exception of one. That one still haunts me as I am pretty sure it was a "black" coyote I had seen and had several trail cam pics of. Drag tangled and whatever was in it managed to get the trap loose from the chain. I never saw the black again and never found my trap
All that to say I am not totally opposed to using a drag, just trying something different
Before I use the ones I have again they will get heavier chain for sure
I am no expert at trapping but I am a sponge soaking up what I can and trying to apply it. Dad trapped when I was a kid and made a little extra money doing it. And my old friend that recently passed was a pretty good trapper too
We sent 2 bobcats to FHA last winter and only 1 sold at their auction, brought $200 though. The other will be offered this spring. They have auctions scheduled for this spring . After the auction payment was sent pretty quick, Canadian check or cheque as they call it.
Nice catches f0olks. We were winded out of our trapping, high winds and very cold for 3 days, nothing was moving. Mainly trail sets. Got our wax dirt ready for snow trapping, what a pain though.
Spouse did take a coyote he jumped while setting.
Out here stinkin grey fox are bait/lure pickpocket specialist! The way a coyote set is opened up just just leaves everything wide open for them. With fur prices the way they I just stiffen up the pan tension and let them pilfer, the way I apply lure/bait there's usually enough smell left for a coyote to come check it out.
Fresh batch of googly eyes for dirt holes and cubby baits.
Here's the little male song dog the spouse took Thursday morning. We'll put him up and see what it brings from the buyer, I'll stretch and dry it for better price but the guard hairs are the key.
Our coyotes can bring in excess of $75 on good years.
Sets going out next weekend for bobcats and coyotes. We use John Graham lures and bait and some Cavens; Tomcat, Deception, Bonanza mild ,Double cross and Powder River Cat Call. Fresh coyote and bobcat urine from Utah, Montgomery Fur Supplies.
Wax dirt is ready and traps are waxed and ready to go. Some will get staked down and some use drags: Sabertooths and natural tree branches.
