I have a question on elk meat care. I've read that you can use dry ice in cooler for travel but that will freeze meat. Is it ok to defrost later and process and then refreeze? I would like to get meat back to DFW and take to Cinnamon Creek Processing. Other option is to take to processor in New Mexico, they can do a 24 hour turn around but not sure of quality of work

Meat will be fine. Place a bag between meat and dry ice though. It will freezer burn it. Also note that cold goes down not up well so make sure dry ice is on top.

Cape wise be careful with dry ice.

If anyone knows of someone on the fence about doing a last minute elk hunt, I know a guy with an extra 6A, New Mexico Archery Tag, unit wide. $4,900 + tax.

Thanks

So it is ok to freeze meat then take to processor to processed which will require it to be thawed and then refrozen???

It’s not ideal, but if properly handled shouldn’t be a problem.

16 days and 2 hours before we hit the road to CO. Days sure are going by a lot slower now that the countdown is on.

24 days for us. We have 11 days in Sept for archery hunting then move into rifle on the same tag. Best thing about most Wyoming tags , you get archery and rifle season to hunt.

Good luck to you guys going up soon. Travel safe.

17 weeks-ish here.

Just checked the historical weather for my area this year.... in the same time frame the low was -29 and the high was 30, give or take a point or two .

Coldest I've done before was -2.

Can't wait!

Gotcha. I’m just headed to unit 9, landowner tags, hunting a larger ranch with a lot of water sources. Was curious if it may be same set up. Doesn’t sound like it though. Good luck.

I'm going on my first elk hunt in September and am debating which rifle to use. It's between a Remington Sendero 7 mag (160 grain nosler partition) and a Sako .338 mag (haven't picked bullet yet).

Any suggestions?

Either rifle with a partition will be more than plenty of gun. I would take whichever you shoot better or are more comfortable with.

They sell rolls of Velcro band with one side hook and the other loop. Cut a piece as long as about 4X the width of the strap. Some straps might have a loop sewn in where this Velcro can be inserted. Either way roll up the strap and wrap the Velcro band around to attach to itself.

Exo calls them strap keepers: http://exomountaingear.com/shop/strap-keepers/

First search at Walmart came up with this where you could cut your own: https://www.walmart.com/ip/VELCRO-R-...Black/19535849
