So if the Anthrax is in the dirt and the animals are picking it up while eating.....

Am I doing a disservice / promoting it by throwing corn in the off season?

The deer are having to pick up scraps of corn the pigs leave behind (disturbing the soil themselves) but I do have some on camera.

Anthrax is carried up and out of the soil mechanically by plant growth. The animals eat the plants and ingest it. Then, they die and decompose, leaving a big pile of spores to filter down into the soil and wait there until the next time conditions are right. Then, plants grow where that deer died and carry the spores up for the next animal to come along and eat. I wouldn't worry about running a feeder. If your place gets hit it gets hit.

I have been hunting in Kinney county since 2006, I don't remember ever hearing about Anthrax as much as I have this year. I guess we have been lucky since I got on there. I was at the lease July 11th and didn't see any signs of problems, but I wasn't looking too hard either.. Sure hope it isn't too bad.....

Straight west of there about 15 miles. Same ranch as Jason86. We have found 40, no telling how many are in the brush we haven’t seen or found.

As of yesterday there was way less flies and no recent bodies found that looked very fresh.

Good to know. I’m one of two feeding year round and didn’t want to get the stink eye when they start finding anthrax dead deer laying a round.

I’m going out this weekend to look around, I did find a dead deer outside the feed pen two weeks ago, and it looked like a mountain lion got ahold of it. The game warden said that if it was anthrax nothing would eat it. Is that what y’all are seeing with the dead animals? I’m still getting pics of deer and exotics everyday on my cell cameras.

found a fawn dead in the feed pen here in montell. I’m thinking it just couldn’t get out. So far that’s all I have found dead so far. Setting here on the porch, I catch a smell of something dead when the wind blows out of the canyon. I went down and looked for it but never found it.

Those Tarantulas eat ants. I saw one chasing ants up and down a wall of an old Ice House.

Im getting hit or miss reports from up and down Juno hwy 189. Some area hit really hard, other areas not at all. There have only been 2 or 3 animals found on our place.
Prayers to whatever it takes to stop the outbreak.

Sadly, the number of carcasses found isn't a direct reflection of animals lost IMO. We've gone from 1000's and 1000's of deer pictures from May-June to literally zero the past two weeks and have only 11 carcasses to show for it.

Hoping the deer have somehow realized something is wrong and moved off for a bit.

This right here for us too. My brother was up at our place over the weekend off Old Juno Rd (410) and didn't see one whitetail. He drove 410 North of us and South of us in the evening and morning where we normally see tons of deer every hundred yards and he didn't see a single one.

I was out there 3 weeks ago on the west side of Val Verde County. It was hot and dry as heck. I think some of our lease friends are going back this weekend or next and I hope to get a report from them. I didn't see a lot of activity in the afternoon when I was there, but I never really have when its this hot. most of the activity was in the morning and it was pretty slow as well.

I'm definitely going back in mid September to complete my feeder filling obligation for the year and we'll see what happens. I'm hoping we get some rain before then. We have no water on our lease and when it rains it fill the "pots" in the rocks. We're hoping to get a couple of guzzlers built this next year.

What’s the “magical temp” for anthrax to go dormant? All I’ve seen is cooler weather but wondered if there’s a general idea what that temp is.

It looked like that area may have received a little rain yesterday. I'm pretty sure our lease got some rain. At least it looked like it on RADAR.

That’s better than hearing below 90. Can’t cool off quick enough. It’ll be a month before I can get back to the lease to pull cards and see if anything is still around the feeder. We found a few dead last month but no telling how bad it really is. Hoping we get lucky and it didn’t hit us bad.

Was out that way this past weekend and witnessed almost an inch of rain Friday evening. This is my 3rd trip since July and we are very close to a 100% whitetail die off from my estimation.

We're very close to "The Windmill" when you look at Google Maps.

I'm pretty sure we got some rain, just not sure how much. I was intently watching the radar as the rain passed over the Val Verde/Terrell County line. I hope I can make it out near the end of this month to refill feeders and check cameras.

Question for those that have been through an anthrax outbreak in the past if any have. We pulled cards today and not a single WT on camera since July 20-21. Had them on camera up until that timeframe. We’ve found 5-6 dead deer in the last month but as most on here there’s a consensus as no one knows how many are dead or if the majority moved off and “might” come
Back when it cools off in Nov-Dec. Has anyone ever come to an agreement with the LO to suspended their season calling it a wash and possibly applied any paid dues towards the next season? Has LO offered full refund? Just trying to get a gauge on how others have handled it. We’re going to talk to our other members tomorrow and get opinions on what we want to propose to our LO. Obviously each LO is different and situations vary.

Most landowners will be sympathetic to the situation but I doubt you will find one willing to credit you another season.

That’s along my lines of thinking. Appreciate the input. If our season is still a go I’m hoping the majority have moved off and they will return later in season when cooler.

Unless there was something already written on the lease agreement not sure the LO would give credit for the entire year or even partial credit. Good luck, hope the area WT herd was not totally devastated and recovers quickly.

Great point with the lease agreements. We’re just trying to wrap our heads around this like many others are having to. Terrible situation for everyone involved. Signs that we’ve seen are that the entire herd didn’t get wiped out but there’s no guarantee. Can only hope they moved off and will return with food at other places becomes scarce.

When we first got on our current place in VV (2012) numbers were very low. They had definitely come off of some kind of recent die off. Anthrax was never confirmed, but the deer just weren't there. Also major drought at that time. We were really glad to see the population increase by a lot each season since.

Under our previous landowner, we were locked in at the rate we joined as long as we stayed. He knew the pasture was hurting and he priced it accordingly. We enjoyed a really fair price for several years.
After the ranch changed ownership 2 years ago lease dues went up. Considerably. With a 3 year agreement. Better than nothing but I sure liked the old way better.

You may approach your LO with a similar agreement to lock you in at a current price, at least until your pasture recovers. Which won't happen overnight, but won't take as long as you think.

I hope the worst is behind everyone that has been affected.

Any updates for those who were affected with Anthrax? I've been going 1-2 times a month since this outbreak hit and we're up to a couple dozen whitetail sightings in 2-3 days when driving the ranch with a handful of deer going to each feeder each day. This is a HUGE improvement from the ZERO deer we had back in late July.

I'm fairly certain we had a 100% die off and what deer we currently have are coming from other areas as these deer a crazy skittish, will not jump into pens (have taken down most of my pens), and none of the bucks seen have been mature animals.

What's everyone else seeing?

I was at our lease Friday and Saturday. I saw 1 yearling doe when driving to the stand one day and 1 yearling 6 point while hunting one evening. Nothing else was seen from the stand or driving around. I did see quite a few Aoudad but the deer are pretty much gone.

I don't blame you and will be doing the same if our lease fee doesn't stay 1/2 price or if a herd doesn't continue to return.

Looks the same in western Edwards County. Our ranch is only 8000 feet to the Val Verde line. We had deer on camera on July 13th. after that only a few does. Corn stacking up and protein feeders untouched. We went to the ranch Thanksgiving day and sat all weekend, alot of no deer seen or a few does and young bucks, 1 to 2 years old. Some of our neighbors have seen a few 6 and 8 points nothing mature. We own our ranch so there's on packing up and moving. We are killing hogs and a few wild sheep and just waiting for the deer herd to return to where we were before July. It may be a few years from what I hear from the locals who are familiar with this plague.
