    Yellowstone Vacation

So I've used the Search Function and read thru a bunch of threads, but not finding much...

We are planning a family vacation between 5 families to Yellowstone for a week during the last week in May in 2020. None of us have ever been and have NO CLUE on where to stay, what to see, things to do, or what airport we even need to fly into. So my questions are, if you had a week to plan a family vacation in Yellowstone, where would you stay, where would you fly into, and what would you do. (tentative plan is to rent a big house for all 15-18 of us to stay in).

Fly into Jackson WY and rent a car. I can’t help on a house but I’d check around West Yellowstone MT. May will likely be cold and some of the passes closed.

American Airlines has direct flights from DFW into Jackson. It’s few miles from the South entrance into Yellowstone. I’ve been 4 times and just got back a couple of weeks ago.

We went in 2016, rented and RV here in dallas and drove the family and dogs up and back. Stayed for 10 days at the canyon village campground. As you would expect almost all of the campgrounds get booked waaaaaay in advance so if you are going to go that route get it done soon as possible.

May is early and we may still have lots of snow, or none. Good time to go, not near as crowded. Like stated fly into Jackson or Cheyenne and rent a vehicle or a few and drive over. Cheyenne would be about 7 hrs from Jackson.
I would look for a house near Jackson just for the scenery, West Yellowstone would probably be cheaper.
I would call ahead and inquire about which roads are open and when in Spring.
Cody is another neat town to stay in, museum is there, Irma hotel and small town western feel.
You'll have cool weather and perhaps a snow while in the area.
Jackson has an Elk Fest sometime in May but I think it's earlier in the month, antler auction and Old West Days all at the same time.
Make your reservations early for lodging.

Another option would be to fly into Idaho Falls also, and stay on the west side of the Tetons in Victor or Driggs. Adds a little to your travel, but much cheaper too. Tourist season will start getting expensive for rooms. VRBO will have some ranches with cabins for groups as large as you are talking. Can get to West Yellowstone that way, or do the big loop all the way thru and around Jackson.

I'd love to do a Yellowstone vacation in the next year or so, but I think I'm gonna wait until they finish the casino before I take the family up there. Plus, the Beck Bros. got me a a lil scared.

We did a similar trip this year. Definitely go towards the end of May, before school is out, and avoid the huge crowds. Stayed in West Yellowstone, lots of options, we stayed in a resort area in town with cabins, Hibernation Station. Worth checking out for a large group. Good restaurants in W Yellowstone. Yes, it did snow and some of the trails had snow but nothing impassable when we were there.

We flew into Bozeman, MT and stayed in West Yellowstone. Hayden and Lamar valleys and day break and dusk. Lots of animals.

You’ll save a lot of money flying into Billings and renting a car there. We flew into Billings, went to west Yellowstone for 1 night, Jackson for 3 nights, and Cody for 1 night, then back to Billings. Saved over $1,000 doing that; and it let us see a lot.

West Yellowstone is a pretty cool place to stay just outside the park. We spent a few days up there last month and had a great time.
