Default Epic Trad Javi Hunt

Yep, it is already an epic hunt by most standards... a few javis are dead and a few more are in jeopardy.

Randy, Jeff (Featherflinger), and his buddy Jim are down in South Texas with me on thier first javi hunt... all four of us are toting our single stick and strings stalking all sorts of critters.

Stay tuned for pics and stories to come. Service is sketchy... because... well... South Texas!

The best part of this pic, is that as Randy is taking the pic, 2 javis step out behind him at 40 yards, so that is what I am focused on.

It is not a swamprabbot hunt without a dead rabbit. This one got the arrow that a javi should have got. Once tagged out, I will attempt to wear these guys out.

Some friends and I hunt javis in webb county every year. We've always donated the meat to the ranch, but this year I decided to try some in snack stick form. Made 50lbs of jalapeno pepper jack snack sticks in my smokehouse and they were amazing. We won't be letting any more go to waste.

Heart shot a little boar! Luckily he didn’t go more than 50 yards because the brush is almost impenetrable at this spot!

Yes, the place we hunted shredded a shirt for me. The ranch manager told us not to go into the thick stuff after them because of the rattlesnakes.

I ended up killing all 4 animals with the same original Simmons Tigershark broadhead. I’ve killed a lot of animals with this particular broadhead!

Question of quriosity......did the deer down there still have antlers? I was at my place this weekend and most every buck still had both sides.

I got the impression they were starting to drop, so yes and no.

Honestly though, for all my trips javi hunting in March over the years (5 total on 3 different ranches)... I have never paid much attention as I am more focused looking for groups of javi... if I see deer, I just keep driving....

And on top of that, in march, the big guys are so pressured, I have never caught glimpse of one (except in the breeding pen on the one and only HF ranch I hunted)

Rabbits are a blast to hunt with a bow. My priority is to kill a javi, but I usually can't take it and will stop and try and shoot some between stalks... it took all I had to drive past em at times.

Since Jeff bragged on his efficient use of a broadhead, I will take the time to brag on this little road feeder.

Found it at a yard sale for $15... talked em down to $10. Cleaned off the rust and sprayed it with 3 cans of $.99 spray paint from walmart. A $2 wire harness from amazon and I had a $15 hitch mount feeder that goes for $150 at academy.

This was the first time I got to use it in S Texas, which is what I had in mind when I picked it up.

Wish our land owner would allow this on our lease. Our neighbor across the road from us has had two bow hunts allready. First hunt got 22, next hunt got ten with a few more lost. We are covered in these things.

Looks like you fellows had a great time... Jeff I use one SHARK one season, they're awesome!!!

Scott I can't help but think of when you first got your PCH and how proud you were. Reflecting on your success with that bow puts a smile on my face

Randy is that your 4 piece bow that you made?

Way to go "new guy"

It will be coming up on 5 years that I have had this bow. I have brought it on every hunt. A few longbows have ridden shotgun, but that's it. It was the best thing I have ever bought. It has nicks and scratches from being dragged around the state, through all manners of brush.

Between you and Mark, you guys set me out on the right path from the very beginning. I am always grateful for your generosity in sharing your time and talent.

After I killed my first javi with a compound Mark posted "awesome, now go kill one next year with your trad bow"... and I have never looked back.
