Long story short I won a once in a lifetime mid Asian ibex hunt in Tajikistan at sheep show this year. Two of the best mountain bow hunters in the world have told me don’t take a bow because of the terrain and the way they hunt there, so i guess I’m taking a rifle. I haven’t killed anything with a rifle in almost 20 years. Don’t really even own one worth taking. I know everyone has a rifle option so let’s hear them. Your making a 700 yard hunting rifle what you taking? Here is what I’m hunting.

I’d say 28 Nosler or if you want to stay a little more main stream 300 Win Mag.

I'd say if you haven't shot a rifle in 20 years you need to get closer than 700yds unless you are already and accomplished long range marksman. 300 winmag is what I'd choose.

I can’t tell how big those critters are. I’d say 257 Weatherby Mag or .300WM like others have said.

28 Nosler or 7RUM. Both carry plenty down range and the long slender bullet designs far outperforms 30 cal rounds. I know 30 cal has a big following but the BC on the 28 Nosler rules

I would be taking my APR in 7 SAUM. But I’d have my vortex fury 5000. Or something comparable To take most of the guess work out of it!!!

I would take my .300 WinMag. It's light, has nice glass and shoots light out much farther than I can.

On second thought, since you won the hunt, you have extra money and NEED a new lightweight APR custom rifle with Swarovski glass. I would still opt for a .300 WinMag and it would kill the same as my own, BUT it would be SO much cooler with a new lightweight custom mountain rifle!

280 AI with a 160 grain bullet, I wouldn't suggest a magnum just because of recoil and extra weight. But if you want a magnum then any 28 caliber with a 190 grain bullet.

If you reload I’d go with a 7 Sherman max or mega. If not something like the 28nosler or 300 prc would be my top choices in a lightish weight setup.
Spend some serious time at the range in different positions and conditions till you’re comfortable hitting a 5-6” circle at 700 consistently and call it good. |

Another vote for 300winmag.
They have been used in 1000y competition. I have a custom Interarms Mark X in 300wm I can reload anything from 110 to 220gn.. There are many quality factory rounds available. I would look into a Christensen Arms 300wm |

I have a 7 Mag STW that is my absolute go to rifle...when I'm hunting out of a blind or a truck. There is no way I would take that thing into altitude. It stays in the safe when I go to the mountains. As others have said, I would be in the market for a lightweight/mountain rifle.
Since you said you haven't really gun hunted in 20 years, I'm going to assume you don't reload. In that case, I would go with 300 win mag so I could be sure I would have access to ammo. That way if you need to play around with some different loads at least you have options. |

Do you know how to adjust for that thin air at high altitude? Ram ballistics and trued them? Just stating there’s a lot more to it than buying a gun capable of that. 300 win or 7 mag. 300 wsm or 7 Saum. You’ll want high BC and horsepower at that distance. Need high BC to cut the wind and you’ll need to be able to read the wind up there. Chances are it’ll be high wind that high. 700 is a risky risky shot in high wind. And especially at an altitude you haven’t proved data in. Buying the equipment is the easy part. For the record, I own the gear and know how to use it. It would have to be perfect conditions for me to attempt that shot on that animal in a place like that. |

A .284 or larger caliber rifle you are comfortable with will be the best suited one. I personally prefer the 28 nosler or 300 prc. I shot 2 mule deer last week with the 300prc at 500 and 675 yards without incident. It really boils down to what you can shoot comfortably out of a light backpack ready caliber.

But I like the 7mm STW or the .280 Nosler. Or even a standard 7mmMag. |
