Anyone bought strangers mounts for your wall?

I often see mounts for sale and sometimes the cost is about as much as I’d spend getting one mounted. My house is almost wall to wall with animals my wife and I have killed. They are personal trophies to me that I can reflect on and remember the fun I had hunting them. I personally can’t imagine buying a mount and hanging it up if I didn’t kill it. I can see businesses buying them simply to decorate their establishment. Have any of y’all actually bought an animal mount you didn’t kill and displayed it in your home, office, man cave, etc.? If so, why? Not judging just looking for other perspectives from folks who do this.

I’m in the same boat as you, don’t understand having someone else’s mount up in your house/man cave/other location unless it a mount passed down by family or a Jackalope or something.

If I didn’t kill it then I wouldn’t display it. The personal memory and story are the biggest reasons to display something for me

I've got a couple that were close family member's, but none from strangers. Don't mean much to me unless I killed it. Kinda reminds me of the guys that buy duck bands so they can show off to the rest of the part timers.

I did "get" some mule deer antlers from a fellow TBHr because my wife wanted them for some decor. Still have them hanging proudly on my wall.

I do have some of my own now, but at the time all the doe I had killed were antler less.

I love that statement! "Perspective" is a word that I have embraced in recent years. It has humbled me many times. It kind of revealed how many times I was judging someone without even attempting to understand their perspective.

I will soon. Friend of the family divorced and her husband had left a lot of mounts behind before he moved to south america with his mistress.
I would rather hang them than end up in a the city dump. I also wanted to buy a badger mount from a member that looked great. Shipping would have killed the deal. Would rather buy that nice badger mount than send one to taxi and come back looking like poo.

I feel the same as you Jeff. I do have a couple that my Dad gave me but all the rest are trophies that I killed that are special to me. Other than for business decoration, I would never buy someone else's mount for display personally. No big deal if others do..

Not really a stranger...but I got my grandpa's deer mounts that he shot in Hearne and Del-Rio. They mean a lot to me. Its amazing that the one he shot in Hearne in the 60's is a little 10" basket six ....but that was a trophy back then. So much he had it mounted.

I only have mounts that me and my family have shot but I have bought paintings that other people painted. Seems similar to buying taxidermy, it's also artwork.

So just a perspective. When I went through my first divorce I found a bar that would buy all my mounts. It upset me but I was in a bad situation. I really missed looking at deer on the wall. Sounds stupid I know. I landed up having pictures of those deer and made a photo album. I did contemplate buying some once I was on the upswing from a fella that was getting rid of them cheap. Very similar to my situation previously. Some could have passed as my previous deer as well. To me although a different deer kinda preserved the memories, but I didn’t and just rolled with photo album and told myself just like anything there is always another one I can shoot and put up on my own. So I could see people doing it for unique situations or appreciate a nice taxi job.

I have a scrubby set of antlers that an old man gave me with a story. He only asked that I tell folk I took the animal, I just can’t do it with a straight face. Supposedly the guy was the real life inspiration for “Jug Johnson”. I eventually get to that when I have enough time because it really is good humor that should continue to live on.

I can see where someone might really like the "style" and use them for decor only

Cheaper to buy a mount than it is to go hunting

That being said, my mounts ended up in the attic cause they would look out of place in our home, and I'm fine with it. If someone wanted to buy them I'd probably sell them

To add to my other post, it's all about intent. It's one thing to buy mounts because you like the way they look. No judgement there. Just don't go buy a big trophy deer head and act like you killed something amazing. I've seen a person do that, it's pathetic.

I bought a big ole striper mount off Craigslist 10+ years ago. Gave it to my neighbor for his fish camp on the Trinity. For $25 it looked cool on the wall.

I'd have no problem buying one if I didn't have one of my own and needed it to go with the decor in a room, like over a fireplace or something. I'd shamelessly make up all kinds of good stories about it.

I have a old bass hanging in the garage that I found at a carwash. I never tell anyone that I was the one that caught it.

Well for the ones that don't mind hanging others trophies on the wall start saving your money because with this economy only getting worse there will be plenty available... I know several full time shops that will be selling mounted trophies shortly... Unpaid invoices for finished work are stacking up high and fast... Its a **** shame..

If I found a good deal on a bison, moose or steer, why not? Fun to look at and can be enjoyed either way.
A friend had the sheep grand slam and a bunch of other really interesting trophy class mounts I’d have loved to have had simply from hearing and reading his stories and the memories from our time together.
I’ve given up on my quest for a jackalope and had to settle for one someone else has gotten.

I've never been in the situation to buy someone else's mounts, but it always seemed like an odd thing to do. Then we were in an antique shop a few months back and they had some really neat, old mounts. A few fish, one deer, and a cool euro Mule Deer. I thought long and hard about buying the muley and one of the fish. Just to have them in my office at work. They were old enough that it would be obvious I wasn't the person that took the animals.

I decided against it. I could see the conversations that would come from visitors.

"Great muley! Where did you get him?"

I have a wall full….most from estate or garage sales….all are for sale and everyone who sees them know where they came from …..have another wall full that are my harvests and are not for sale….to each their own but I hate to see a good mount be forgotten or trashed no matter who shot it!

I bought a house on Lake Fork from the son of the owner who had died.
He left 13 trophy bass on the walls and six years later I sold the house and left all 13 on the walls for the new owner. Everyone who entered my house asked about them and the old man got all the credit.
I have a Russian boar mount in my outdoor kitchen that just looks the part that a neighbor gave me to keep it out of the trash.

The only way I might buy a mounted animal, would be if it was some well known huge buck, or elk. Then I would display it like Cabela’s does. With the the known info, where and when killed, killed who, what the used. Then the story of the hunt. It would be more of a historic hunting art display. But since I don’t own some huge mansion and have many millions in the bank, I don’t see me doing anything like it that.

I don't think I would buy just a random mount, but I would happily hang a mount of an animal someone else took if I had a connection to the story of the animal. I could think of almost all the ones in my dads house and a few from a couple different hunting buddies over the years when they become available.

Got to have a story/memory to go along with every mount!

On a ranch I hunted in years past, they had some nice bull elk. The trophy bull elk opportunities were by luck of the draw. Only caveat was you had to mount it and hang it in your office (company ranch) as long as you had one, or you could send it back to the ranch and they would hang it in the lodge.

The guys that drew the hunt always opted to hang em in their offices. If you ever left employment, you could take it with you.

Not any mounts but have bought a euro that the guy was going to cut up. It's a whitetail with a long extra tine along the main beam. Had our friend do a shoulder mount . Mainly to honor the buck, it's nice deer.
Had some other guy give me their deer from a guided hunt we were all on, 150 class whitetail. Spouse did a nice euro on it.

We bring deadheads out of the forest when we find them too, and get them tagged. Couldn't even tell you how many we have hanging in the garage and shed etc.
We've given a few away over the years.

Wife has a grandfather's black buck and a typical whitetail mount we have no room for.

To me half of the reason why I get a mount is to remind me of the memories I had hunting the animal and the people that were there with me when I got the animal. Some of the fondest memories I get from looking at my mounts were the toughest hunts that were not fun at the time but now that enough time has passed it is strangly better than the easier hunts.

I would only have my own mounts or mounts of family members that are no longer with us.

I only have my own animals up. Assuming my dad goes before me I might end up with a couple of his, and would hang one or two for the memories (I was with him when he took his two best bucks to date, so I at least was involved in the process). As for buying someone else's taxidermy, the only scenario where it might happen for me is when I get a lake house in the future. I would possibly consider buying some for decor.
