Default Prostate Biopsy Today

I left out the word cancer in the title because we are praying that I don't have cancer. Of course I would not be having a biopsy unless there was a real chance of having prostate cancer.

I recently read the threads of two TBH members concerning their struggles with and treatments for prostate cancer. I have spoken prayers for both members and will continue to do so.

While reading these threads I was waiting on results from a prostate specific MRI that was done at the University of Iowa Medical Center. I got the results week before last from my urologist. The MRI detected a small lesion. The U of I radiologists rate lesions on a 1-5 scale. 1-2 benign, 3 undetermined, 4-5 very likely cancer. Mine was a 3. This added to the uncertainty because my PSA which had slowly climbed from 2 to just over 4 in the last 4 to 5 years had actually dropped to below 4 back in January. Since my history was showing a gradual climb in my PSA, (excluding the last test that dropped), and the undetermined rating on the lesion my urologist recommend the biopsy.

The MRI guided biopsy aided my urologist to target the lesion. He took another 12 or so samples as well.

The biopsy itself was not too bad because I was pretty well knocked out. The anesthesiologist called it a "light" sleep, but I was out. Now.....the after effects have not been fun. It's painful to use the bathroom and there is definitely some blood loss occuring.

Now it's back to the waiting game for the biopsy results. I have tried to be proactive thru this process of monitoring my PSA. First I pray that this lesion is benign. If it is cancer I pray that we have caught it early.

I have been told that if we live long enough we will all get prostate cancer in some form or fashion.

Make sure you are getting PSA tests when you have a physical exam at any age, but especially when you are over 60.

I have been cancer free for 4 years now. I had to have the radical prostatectomy all my cores were 3 and 4 and most were 70% cancer. Keep the faith.

Prayers for you. My father just finished his 28 day radiation treatment last week. He didnít enjoy the process, but said it wasnít painful or too long of a process each day. We are hopeful and optimistic. Keep your faith in the Lord.

Prayers up for you too! Your experience and observations are pretty much spot on; not to worry you but you sound like you've thought this out.

My biopsies (one in December and a second in February) went pretty much the same as far as not remembering them. There was a small amount of blood for a only a day or two. I wanted the Proton Beam therapy but discovered most insurance won't cover it although, Medicare will.

I couldn't afford MD Anderson's self pay and didn't want to be in "active surveillance" until Medicare took over. Fortunately, I found that I could manage the price at Loma Linda University Hospital in California and I came here yesterday for consultations. I'll start proton therapy in two weeks and the Dr. started me on hormone treatments immediately. Feel free to pm if any questions or just want to talk.

Cant repeat it often enough. If you're over 50, check your PSA number regularly.

Mike, I have followed your posts, and I know the anxiety can be high while waiting for answers. My prayers are up for you. Remember, even if you have the cancer, it is not a death sentence. It, in most cases, can be treated and whipped, so just keep the faith.

1riot1ranger, my prayers for a good resolution for you, also. You will most likely have hot flashes like a menopausal woman with the hormone therapy.

Ha. Thanks for your comments and prayers. I fought doing the hormone and convinced myself it wasn't needed. My doc at MD Anderson and at Loma Linda strongly recommended it so, between the two of them and my wife I got the message to listen. Doc wrote the prescriptions so I could start them that day! Now the waiting for the side effects begins

I have six friends who have beat Prostrate Cancer. Another one beat it for 7 years and it came back unexpectant. Another buddy just told the Dr. to cut that bugger out and completely eliminate the problem. The key thing for everyone to do is be aware and do not sit on a problem or issue that you think might just go away. Especially if you are over 50! If something is bothering you for over a week or two go have it looked at. Get that physical every year and watch that PSA.

Mike we all wish the best for you. All you can do is take it every day, one day at a time. If you start fretting and worrying too much it robs you of each days potential. You are going through the process so just play the cards as they fall.
