Sounds to me that he may have a thorn or sharp stick stuck in his foot. I had one several years ago and he had a roofing nail between his toes. Just wondering how many cows is he with. You may be able to get a few more years out of him depending on how many cows he is serving. Good luck they ain't cheap.

Pretty common for the vet to take their temp. They stick a thermometer in the rectum. At least that is how I have seen my vet get the temp. Hope he is able to get his bull taken care of. I have learned my lesson. If I had another one in a bad way I would get him to the Packer before he gets to bad.

I was going to posit either hoof rot or a sprain. Ours tend to obtain sprains after they've been fighting (cows, too). Usually, they get over it on their own. However, the fact that your bull is down and won't come to food is concerning. It will be interesting to see how he reacts to the LA200. You'll know more then. |

Here is a pic. Sorry I am slow on the update. It took us an hour but we got him loaded. Took him to a vet and dropped him off. Have not heard from them, it might be tomorrow as it’s first come first served. He may have been slightly better today but still a bad limp.
I have a cow dropping a calf at the moment, more later. |

Angus bulls that size and age.....usually time to upgrade. You'd be surprised somebody will pay good money for him. Get you a good young bull. I've watched my Dad go through this for over 25 yrs.

I know the smart thing is to get rid of an older animal. Bottom line of course it’s the right thing. But, I have gotten soft in my old age. This boy has been so gentle. I bet over 50 people have crawled on him for a pic. I don’t need the money that badly, I try to take care of my family, friends, and animals, even at a cost.
I do appreciate all responses, suggestions, and comments. If I find out tomorrow that he can’t be healed and must be put down, I will sleep better knowing I did what I could. Neither of us mind being called Chunky. :-) However, when I got that I was about 60 lbs heavier than today. Still not skinny though. |

It appears your cattle are more pets then livestock. To each there own. Usually people don't "put down" big ole chunks of beef like that. That will make a lot a hotdogs.

No more cows than he's covering 7 aint bad as long as he dont come up lame. What kind of minerals are you feeding? I had a bad outbreak of foot rot several years back. Switched to Purina wind and rain loose mineral . Recommended by the vet. I didn't have any more trouble after that.. I did notice before that the same cows will get foot rot again kinda like someone with athletes foot .

If that picture is from today it looks like his rf pastern is swollen. Probably got it hung in something and injured it. Now he has cellulitis from the injury. Id give him about a half hour of hydrotherapy with a garden hose. Just run water over it. Then I'd give him a dose of dexamethasone in the vein. Then id hit him with banamine for the next five days. Id also give an antibiotic. Draxxin works wonders. I think he will be just fine.

To treat foot rot, put it in a squeeze chute, wash the feet really well. Spray 10% bleach and water solution and saturate the feet. Give boluses, LA200, or any other antibiotic. |

call your local High School talk to the FFA teachers. All the FFA Barns have large animal vets that come out to the barn.
We have 2 that come to the barn and one that will not. |

I don’t treat them all like pets, but I admit I do have an attachment to a couple of them.
If I had no choice, and he wasn’t full of something, meds, I could eat him. It’s not against my principles at all, just would rather save him if possible, even if it’s not the best business decision. I have mineral tub and blocks out all the time. Have never had an issue with rot to this point. Still waiting on a call from the vet. |

I posted an update thread, but if anyone comes here looking.
He is doing much better, still a slight limp and the last to get to the pens. He had an abscess with an infection. They gave him Banamine and LA300. Washed and bandaged his foot. I picked up the end of the second day. A little difficulty loading him up, but got it done Thanks. |

I'm glad your bull is on the mend.
I understand the bull has sentimental value to y'all but, please don't get to comfortable with him. He is a bull. I have had bulls be gentle for the most part and the next time I mess with them they were bent on killing me. I'm talking run me to my truck and proceed to try and knock my center console out while I was climbing out the passenger side. Up till that point he acted just like the others. |
