I did some scouting and did not see many oak trees producing this year I think the hard freeze kill the Early blooms. seen a few white oaks dropping and some water oaks with acorns the rest of the oaks are bone dry I didn't see any acorns on the red or black oaks.

Well I just had my first camera stolen in the Sam. Not really a big deal as it was a cheap WGI camera. I am more ****** I didn't get to see what was on it. Here is my dilemma its one of my better areas and I have a lot of regulars in mainly does. I planned on hunting there Saturday morning. Question is do I still Hunt there or just write it off and move on. Again not worried about the camera as I use cheap cameras for this exact reason.

need more info. how far in are you? 59 side or 45 side? I hunted 4 miles from pipe gate and never had anything stolen because there weren't many hunters back that far.

I guess I don't understand why it matters east or west or .5 miles in or 5 miles in. Either way the area is compromised. its more of is the jackwagon who stole it gonna come back and try to sit there. Not that it matters but I've hunted the area for several years now and never had a run in with anyone. But to answer your question its about a mile back and west.

I've been gone for 5 years, but I remember the get togethers and the opening morning lunch. And of course a little smack talk.
I checked into this thread for nostalgic reasons as well. I do remember getting together in New Waverly once. I have some good memories in the Sam. Pulled TONS of hogs and a few bucks outta there.

I am curious about how my old favorite area is doing. Last couple of years I hunted the Sam it blew up with people, after having it to my self almost all my life as I grew up nearby. What was odd is it didn't seem like I saw more people on the way in or parked at the gates, just more people in my little honey hole. It was weird and discouraging. I wonder if it has returned to normal.

Cut my teeth on public land hunting there. Still love the challenges and triumphs of public land. I don't like being confined to a few hundred acres. Sam shaped me as a hunter, for sure.

I noticed you disappeared from there and figured as much. I only watch it for hunting and fishing stuff anymore.

Nice to see some familiar names on here. My boys are old enough to tag along now so i went the lease route. Easier than lugging pop ups and junk into the forest, plus we have tons of trails and room to ride in the off season. They enjoy it. Off course we bought the bass boat as well so not as much lease time once the freezer has meat and more time on the gulf of conroe.

I didnít, but Iím also brand new to hunting. I didnít see anything but I saw a gut pile near where I turned in, so someone got it done it there. Heard quite a few sporadic rifle shots too at first light.

This will be my 2nd year. Went a bunch last year but it's a long drive from south Houston. Plan on camping overnight on the weekends this year to spend a little more time in the blind. I have a couple spots that I like but have to get there early to snag 'em.

Spent the last three days out in the Sam. Saw few doe, almost got to draw on one I walked up on but she darted while I was lifting the bow. Found two good spots with acorns falling and good sign. Still think it's too warm. Get stinky by the time you get in there.

Spent the opener on the west side. Had scouted a pretty good spot but my cargo carrier busted on me on the way in, wasn’t going to make it the 2.5 miles without smelling like a locker room by the time I got there so I hunted a crappy spot. Didn’t see a single deer, hog, squirrel or jackalope he entire day.

Divorced dad so can only hunt every other weekend so I’ll hopefully be back out there next weekend to try again.

Stubblefield over flow on the back side of 1374. Equestrian trail head and camp ground on 1375 is also free. kellys pond is also free with primitive camping down the road anywhere you want on the way back to kellys pond as well. the end of 204 i think as well.

You do realize that if anyone answers you will have 100 people from google search in your area. Lmao.

Stop stop stop announcing anywhere you hunt or anything else. PM anyone you want to about an area that may be an old time member. No offense but donít PM Me I donít know anything.

Anyone have clarification on if the SHNF antlerless permit also requires a tag off your license? I have taken doe in the past out there with the permit but honestly don’t recall if I used a tag and the permit together as I never tag out.

This weekend however I’ll be helping a friend at his place where I can tag out to help him as he is over populated and not under mld. Need to decide if I hold back a tag in case or go all in…

Itís its own separate tag and doesnít count against your normal license.

Well I may be done in the Sam. Spent 2 days and had nothing but troubles. Illegal stands, 4 wheelers, corn covering the ground, people running dogs (dogs were wearing hunter orange), timber harvesting, forest service building new trails, road hunters were on one road we come out on but don't go in on. It officially has turned into a pile of $#!+. I went to 5 spots and there was very little sign compared to years past. Whoever is in charge of the place obviously is not managing as a WMA. I guess they want all areas to be hike and bike trails or horse back riding. It feels like they are trying to make it into a park now. Game Warden was too ill and they don't answer the forest service phone during the week. It has been trashed by those in charge of it. They must be from Austin. After using the "FOREST" for 40+ years it is anything but a real forest now.

Game Warden was too ill and they don't answer the forest service phone during the week. It has been trashed by those in charge of it. They must be from Austin. After using the "FOREST" for 40+ years it is anything but a real forest now.

Your not kidding about the new trails. Kept running into a trail with blue markers on trees the last two years. Couldnít figure out what the trail was. Park rangers were no help. Wasnít showing up on OnX. Ran into it again when I was out this afternoon. Turns outs itís a new equestrian trail being built.
