Picked up a CNC router from Shapeoko last week. Went with an XL.

It only took me 4hrs or so to put together and square up. Very sturdy machine.

Getting files and designs into their cad program is pretty easy.

Ill post some pictures of what I have done already.

It doesn't come with any clamps to hold down material so I got to make my own!

Program is really easy to use. A few online tutorials and your good to go.

They are fun to watch; my son is co-owner of Turner Sign Systems in Fr. Worth it's pretty cool when his router going. He has some big national accounts and his router is huge, hold the stock with vacuum. I don't remember how big it has to be 10' x 5' at least. Here is a few pics of the router can do.

The machine was $1650, $200 in bits, $140 in the enclosure/bench/wasteboard/clamps/hardware.

Next up is a dust boot($100) and the tool bit zeroing plate($120).

Not too bad I think.

You could sure make some cool plaques made to order... I know like us Knifemakers or other vendors that do shows, kids birthday presents, I think the possibilities are endless. A low investment for starting a business. I spend that much on one grinder just spent 1,600.00 yesterday on another heat treating oven.

I have a 16"w x 33" long

I can go bigger than the 16" if I pass it through the machine though.

There are some awesome projects on here! I've got a flat-ish slab of mesquite I found in dad's barn that I've been trying to think of something to do with. While 2+ inches thick, it's not wide enough for a cutting board.

I've only worked with a little mesquite, its a hardwood but some awesome grain.

Yeah Bjank and I are in the preliminary stages of designing a custom knife. Was thinking a handle but not sure of the logistics. Keep the pics coming! Love these kinds of projects!

with the shapeoko it comes with their free software. That is all I used so far. I have looked a vcarve though. Might try that out.

I have been telling everyone I know that there is a huge market for CNC router work. Every shop within 50 miles of Austin with a 4'x8' machine or larger, is tied up for months.

Once we purchase a house, my garage is going to be home to a 5'x10' Shop Sabre!

Mmoses, I picked mine up last Saturday and took me about a week to put together. I finally got it in the shop and am moving through some saw dust like its going out of style. I borrowed your Texas dish (about 6.5 in wide), I made a finger joint box for my bottle of Andaluzia whiskey, and knocked out a quick logo (did it in spare plywood so there is a pit of tearout - might try a downcut bit for it later)

Next time you come to San Antonio let me know and we will get together and share some notes.

Awesome. We are looking into a 4x8 camaster. We have large workloads just have to decided to keep doing everything by hand or go ahead and automate the process.

Yeah plywood is tough with the tear-out. Is the xcarve software pretty easy to figure out?

Easel has its plusses and minuses. It is free as well and you don't need an x-carve to use it for design. It also has lots of tools like box makers, replicators and what nots. My x-carve is 750mm x 750mm
