2020 “modified buffalo” fall plot

This will be 3rd fall planting on this plot without breaking the soil. This will be first fall planting on this plot with ZERO gly as well. I “think”(hope) I have such a cover of peas that choked out everything that I don’t need it... will see. I’ll try and keep pics in order of events so it makes sense

The vines were 9’-12’ long and still producing. Deer have been living in them for months and can’t keep up! Amazing crop this spring

I didn’t want to kill em all so I’m hoping that by cutting with vines blown over at least a small portion will survive till frost. If not that’s ok

With peas standing I broadcast straight into them

30#- oats
20# barley
20# triticale
20# wheat
10# winter peas
Top dressed 2# of PTT

Next I tried something outside the box...

I had a 10’ hay mower already hooked up...

Since they were blown over as bad as they were and not “snapping” I didn’t roll them and really didn’t care if I didn’t kill 100% of them... but had to thin them out. So I ran a 10’ Kuhn over them. Lol
Note: I realize everyone ain’t got that equipment... and if ya do, I don’t suggest you take it through most plots, but I knew what I had under the foliage.

So now, I have 100% of seed on wet moist dirt, with wet moist nitrogen rich compost on top protecting from birds. And now we wait...

This is going to be another excellent plot with all that good mulch. In for the results. I planted a couple acres last weekend and had over 1" of rain on it since. Used the cone spreader for the first time and it sure saves time instead of putting out 200 lbs of seed by hand.

Looks like you’ll have great results Low Fence. We want to try something similar this fall. Not trying to hijack your thread because I think this is a similar subject....

Farm in Wise county. 7 and 4 acre plots we plant wheat each year by discing, spread and drag. Each summer Johnson grass and other weeds grow then we just repeat. This year (like in 2-3 weeks before the next rain) we’re thinking of broadcasting the fall mix (wheat, oats, peas, etc) and mowing all the Johnson grass as mulch. Going to try spraying one plot with gly first. Thought?

In that situation. I’d spray now if possible. Broadcast seed once dead and then mow or roll after. If you don’t have ability for 2 trips, then I’d wait another 2 weeks or so and shred and broadcast before a rain... or broadcast then shred.... it will fall into the thatch very easily

Thats very cool. I had hoped to try something similar this year...drilling fall mix into standing forage soybeans. Everything was going along nicely till Laura. hit. The bull dozer pushing all the trees out of the field interrupted the plan.

Are you planting the beans the same way, or drilling them in?

Looking great! We are in Menard county and have been broadcasting, mowing, and cultipacking our fall plots and they have done well the past two years. We haven’t done a spring or summer plot out there bc it’s typically Too dry. Keep up the great work!

So you are not spraying to kill vegetation first?

I have never just broadcast and shredded. Curious.

I sprayed all my plot areas with GLY on Saturday and hope to get a good kill off. Then grain drill and shred the dead stuff I sprayed

The burning question for me is why the hogs arent in that plot the very night you seed. That’s what happened to me both times I tried TnM. They ate virtually every grain of wheat that was on the ground. The pea vines were rooted up into piles. I walked the plots and could not find a single grain of wheat. I have now resorted to what I call minimal tillage. Just open the disc gangs enough to make a bunch of 1” to 1.5” grooves, plant, fertilize, drag. I get great crops with minimal soil disturbance. I wish I could TnM, it would speed things up a lot and provide some natural moisture from the thatch. I still get the organic benefits from the thatch because it’s still decaying in the soil, but my deer usually eat more of my peas than what you pictured. I have limited acreage toplant so I don’t have as much space to plant. Yours look great !

My deer would kill my peas planted the traditional way. They were drawn to them too soon. This method “I think” is allowing me to sneak past them cause I’m not plowing dirt. Giving my peas a huge head start.... (got perfect rain early in too)

Hogs eat lots of mine, and I have to thermal poison a bunch of them

Your doing it right. This is first time I didn’t have to spray. What I had was a very attractive plot anyway. No grass and weeds. I didn’t care if I didn’t kill it, but had to thin it for sunlight reasons

Put in 25 acres in throckmorton this weekend. Plots were shredded sept 1. Still had good dead thatch in most. Drilled on top of that Saturday. Then retooled for Sunday and sprayed them with gly

Also did a test plot with sunflowers, same way.

That’s what I would prefer every time. They shredded this plot....cause they wanted to do something basically. It’s wasn’t y’all enough to shred and I wasn’t driving 5 hrs again that plant. So I drilled into the month old thatch and sprayed everything to kill competition

This is interesting, definitely going to follow along. I have a place north of Sulphur Springs that I'm going to try and build a couple smaller plots on but don't have a disc so I might try these methods. Plus there are two substantial easements, pipeline/powerline, that I could try this method right away. They are pretty overgrown with grasses right now though.

2 week progress. Tipping the peas worked great. I kept most of them and allowed enough sunlight in to kick off the brassicas and grains good!

4”-6” growth on grains and great coverage too

Looks great! I did a similar thing in one plot but my peas weren’t nearly as thick as yours and had a lot of weeds so I sprayed, broadcast, and mowed/rolled. This plot hasn’t been disced in 2 years so the thatch is building up nice. Decent growth 2 weeks in, considering it’s only rained once since planting. That’s the no-disc advantage.

That’s for sure. The ‘lil crimper’ is handy when it’s too wet to get the tractor across the creek but takes several passes to knock it down if green.

Where did u buy the crimper? I tried this method for the first time this year and plot is looking good- I’ll try and post pics- I have been looking for a roller to pull behind my buggy

When y'all spray what are y'all using more specifically than gly? I assume there is a week or two between spraying/planting? Very much a rookie here so I hate to bother y'all with the basics.

I like to spray GLy then wait until I get a good kill. Just to lighten the grass/layers so the seed can hit the ground. Some broadcast, but i grain drill.

I am also curious what they spray that doesn't kill everything in their standing plots

I just bought the tractor supply brand gly. Sprayed August 15. Everything layed down pretty good so I just broadcasted seed into dead grass and weeds around Sept 15. Got rain a couple days later and when I came back Oct 1 it was looking good- very happy with my first try at this. I will definitely do more small plots like this next year. My buddy had a big shooter on the edge of that plot opening morning making a scrape. He could not get a shot but awesome to see that plot is paying off.

You would need to go with a “round up ready” soybean or cow pea variety. Then just spray it with gly... if that’s what you are wanting to leave

Another week in. No rain since planting. This is the plot I topped the peas where they were so thick and sprayed the brassica patch (weeds). They are doing fantastic. Hogs are right to the edge of this plot. I’ve lost probably 50 acres this week. My plot I cut with hay mower took a beating though. Lost 1/3+ to hogs last night. Was a carpet of green.... now dirt. I’ll reseed after a blood bath. I hate this time of year, same thing every year
