This is the little church here on Carmen Island. We start the journey home in about 30 minutes. Really sad to leave, this was like a second honeymoon for us. My wife even said this was the best vacation ever. Internet is spotty and intermittent here so Iíll do a full recap as I can. Itís been one hell of a ride getting here and one heck of a hunt!!!!!!!!!

As I mentioned before, 7 years ago I had too many drinks in Vegas at the SCI show and walked over to the Mexico Hunts booth. Mark Bueher from BSC introduces me to Sergio and I asked what it would take to book a sheep hunt on the island. With a handshake and $5000 deposit we set dates for 5 years in to the future.

A year later this spunky plastic surgeon walked in to my office and I ended up taking her to a charity event. Who knew she would become my wife and hunting partner! From the very beginning I told her how amazing this trip to Carmen Island would be. She was truly as excited as I was about this hunt!!!!!!

Overall things have been great and even as a married guy I continued to hunt and knock out some of the North American 29. Here is my Tule elk from last year.

It wasnít always easy along the way and I know nobody has the perfect life. A couple years ago I lost my mother after a surgical complication, I had a complaint filed against me with the State Board(successfully defended and dismissed), and had a lawsuit filed against me. Times were tough! But, perhaps worst of all, we tried to have a child and were unsuccessful. That affected me in ways I could have never imagined and hunting really didnít seem that important for a while. With that we did push Carmen Island back a year. Just days before leaving for the hunt last year the border closed due to Covid. Crap!!!!!!!!

As always, there is lots of prep that goes in to these hunts. Tuning bows, building arrows and trying to get in shape. I was shooting 5-6 days per week over the past several months but I always shoot year round.

So letís start this story. On Sunday (4/11/21) our flight left Amarillo at 0600. A little early but no problem. We both have been extremely busy and weíre ready for a break. I had used TWG to book our flights and they were able to upgrade us to first class for next to nothing. I didnít take a gun but that upgrade was fabulous. Specifically when your big bag shows up a little pudgy! We made our flights with no problems and a little after 1 pm we arrived in Loreto, Mexico. Our bags arrived and only one minor hiccup. My bowcase was outside and nobody would touch it!!!!! Thank God I know enough Spanish to explain it was a bow and arrow and the crisis was averted.

At the airport, we met Gaspar(outfitter/guide), Jesus/Mata(guide and cameraman), and our driver. Bags were loaded and we were off to meet the boat. As on every mountain hunt, I looked around and though ď****, that $&@& looks steep and rough!Ē Oh well, here we go!!! We loaded up on the boat and headed to the north end of Carmen island. That is where the abandoned salt production facility is as well as the lodge. We arrive, get the tour and get settled in. What a place!!!!!

The view from the lodge. Home for the next week!

Boat ride to Carmen Island.

We got settled in and Renee(chef) made us some shrimp quesadillas that were fantastic. I put my bows together and got ready to shoot while Elise went for a run. I shot my VXR out to 80 yards and it was dead on and feeling good. Of course the wind was blowing and my shirt was riding up a d I had Mata filming me shoot but thatís another story! After that I rigged up a spinning rod and tried throwing some lures. No bites.

3D target in paradise. Never shot on a tropical beach before! I have shot on a beach in Alaska but not the same!!!!

The Gear:
I always struggle with picking gear to use because I try lots of stuff. I was torn between broadheads. I thought a big mechanical would fly good in the wind and make a big hole if the shot wasnít perfect. A stout fixed blade would get through at a weird angle if needed. I ended up taking Sevr 2.0, 1.5 and a 1.7. I also took vented iron wills in 100 grains. Here is my setup:

Mathews VXR 68lbs at 29 inches
Montana black gold 4 pin slider
Bee stinger offset stabilizer
Tightspot quiver
Gold tip platinum pierce 300ís with Texas flag wrap
Kifaru pack
Lathrop&sons boots
Sitka pants and shirts

I could not decide on the broadhead and ended up shooting the ram with the one sevr 1.7 that was in the case! I did put a finishing shot in him with an iron will but it wasnít needed.
