Default DIY Aoudad Hunt

Looking for where to start on a DIY Aoudad hunt in West Texas. Has anyone on here done this? Any information you can give would be greatly appreciated. I have looked at guided hunts, but they are so expensive.

Thank you in Advance.

Its the "in" thing right now, so prices are super inflated unfortunately.

Try Mike with WTHO, he has or had some DIY opportunities. Other than that, I'd go to New Mexico and do it DIY.

Look at paloduro canyon public hunting, think there has been a few guys on here in last couple week/months that have done it and done it successfully. But that's the trick getting a tag and finding the sheep.

I am in the same boat. I really want to hunt an Aoudad with a bow pretty bad... but seems like the demand is high and so the prices are also high. I'll just have to wait it out or wait for a good deal to pop-up.

As mentioned Mike with WTHO has DIY opportunities, and his hunters seem to have fair success.

Don't forget Amistad. If you have a boat/kayak/canoe, you can hunt 'em with a $20 permit. Sergio, you trying to keep that place to yourself? LOL. Very difficult to hunt on public but price is right. Can you buy a permit right now during the shutdown?

Shhhhhh!!!!!!!!

They can go there and you can be successful but chances are beyond small. Once you factor in gas and other incidentals plus vacation time for a few trips to get one, if youíre lucky, I think Iíd rather go to Mikeís places and up the chances with a rifle in my hands.

If the OP is ok with maybe never getting one and lots of frustration then Amistad if youíre place .

Solo Hunter filmed a few episodes DIY with Mike if you want to get a feel for one of the places.

Default Luck

My brother lucked out and shot this one on my mom's place. We've caught them occasionally on camera but this is the first time either of us saw one in the flesh.

Hi REM40X do you still have the property available for aoudad hunting? If so I would be interested.

These stupid things run deer and hogs off. You may be able to find land owners in Burnet County near Lake Buchanan that would let you hunt.

Biologic berry protein bags at Walmart and BigAndJ bags. They'll get down in front knees to lick it all up.

We went out there after Christmas. I almost got a shot at a nice ram and my brother hit one. Unfortunately we never found it.

Your brother appears to have mastered shot placement. How far did he go?

I don't remember but know he said it went a looong way. I guess this is why he wasn't surprised to lose the one at Amistad. He saw the hit, knows it was good and felt good about how much penetration he got. But he couldn't find blood and wasn't able to locate him.

Just got back from Devils River SNA on a draw hunt. Loaded with Auodad. I shot 4 but no big rams. That said, 2 weeks before me a little girl shot a 36" ram in the same compartment as I.

I was there too. I was the guy driving the silver Dodge diesel. I got 4 as well. A 28" ram, 22" ram, and 2 ewes. I ended up leaving a day early.

Were you the guy that camped in the tent?

Not many. I think there were 12 of us that got drawn out of almost 4000 applicants.

I was on the 1/24 hunt. Averaged 8 miles a day and only saw 4 aoudad total. One compartment killed a ton, some got nothing, some got a few
