I’ve hiked up that Crest trail dozens of times and on one occasion something large took off through the brush about 20 feet from me. I never carried a gun back then and was never really worried about it either.

This is a perfect example of cat behavior. Lions and even bobcats will often hunker down and let you pass right by. It’s when you make eye contact at fairly close distance that they will break cover. Trapped bobcats will almost always try to lay low until you make eye contact, then they get crazy.
