Like many others I have found a lot right under the skin, that is pretty common.

One time though I found one laying in the back of the pickup. I had shot the deer and loaded it in the truck, and drove to town. When I went to unload the deer, the bullet, A Barnes 7mm/140 X, was laying in the back of the pickup next to the deer. I guess it fell out on the 10 mile drive.

I had something similar happen with a .38 special.
The bullet was on my side of the deer mushroomed out, but not blood anywhere.
Never found the doe. Almost seemed as though the bullet never entered the deer.

            Need pics?

Usually fmj but jacketed hollow points sometimes. Its the reason several of us quit carrying the ammo with the rubber stuff in it. Wayyyy to many failures.

I've seen it at 30 yards and contact wounds

I have heard about the “rubber stuff” causing problems. Hear about hollow points packing with material and not expanding. Crazy things happen.

There's nothing like a good, hard cast "pistol" bullet moving relatively slow to do some serious killing!

I had one fall out of the hide this year.

My BIL just shot a cow elk in NM last week…. Bullet never mushroomed. Went in and killed the cow, but was found intact near the heart.
