Default Cool story about my grandpa

This is a story about my grandpa (Bapa). He has really bad Alzhiemers and doesn't know any of us anymore, but he does apparently remember Jesus. My sister sent me this email a couple days ago, and I thought I'd share it with y'all. My grandmother passed away a couple of weeks ago. He doesn't seem to remember, but he seems to know that somebody is missing now. I really hate Alzheimer's.

Today I went to Tulia on my way home felt like I should stop and see Bapa at the nursing home in Plainview. It was 6:30 p.m. and I tried to talk myself out of stopping because he might be in bed, etc., but then I just kept feeling like I should stop. So I did and they told me he was in the TV room. He was down there talking to some people and then they finally left and I was sitting next to him on the couch. He was just rambling about who knows what. He said, “I don’t hear very good anymore.” I wondered if he meant remember instead of hear. Then I said to him, “You remember Jesus, don’t you?” He made eye contact and said, “yes” and I asked him if he remembered teaching Bible studies, and he said, “I could do that.”

Then he was saying, ‘They’re all gone, I don’t know where they are, but they’re all gone. Everyone’s gone but me.” I said where did they go, and he said he didn’t know. Then I said, “Well someday we’re all going to go to Heaven.” He instantly looked in my eyes and grinned as big as he could and said, “Oh boy, Oh boy, I’ve been waiting. I see it every day.” I said with tears in my eyes, “You do?” He said, “Yes, I’m beautiful there.” He never stopped looking in my eyes as we had this conversation for a couple of minutes and he never stopped smiling. I had to really hold myself together as we sat there looking into each other’s eyes talking about Heaven.

When I finally left a little while later, he said, “I couldn’t go, but now I can.”

I’m not sure of a lot of things, but I know one thing, Bapa knows where he’s going. Even if that’s all he knows!

Great story, thanks for sharing it. My mother had alzhiemers/dymentia before she passed away. It was very hard for me to go see her like that. One day though, I walked in and she said "Hi honey!". She remembered who I was and really had it all together. We were able to talk and talk about things. I stayed as long as I could that day but I now I wish I had stayed longer. The next time I saw her she was worse than ever. So keep going to see him, even though it is hard. You never know what miracles God has in store.

He DOES know where he is going! That's great! My Memaw was in a similar state of mind before she passed. We had a touching and emotional conversation right there in the TV room too. People were there visiting others and suddenly became interested in our conversation. Well, it went on and on, and I became more emotional. Others did too. After we were all spent on emotion, I wiped the tears away, said gooodbye, and started for the door. Just as I reached the door of the healthcare facility, Memaw said very seriously, "Darlin' could you let the cat out for me?" I stopped in my tracks and thought to myself, "What in the world..." I turned with a big smile and said, "Sure Memaw." Cherish every moment and take it anyway it comes. I'll always remember that even though she was out of her mind. Your a good man Shane!

Thanks y'all. I am thankful that my sister is close to him and can visit him regularly. I hate that I am not able to visit very often. I hate even more the thought of my grandad being in the condition he's in and living in a nursing home. My sister's story here made me feel a little better about it, but I still don't like it. I know he's in God's hands though, and this story reinforced that. Very encouraging.

Your story takes me back about 5 yrs. my grandparents health was failing and as I live right down the road from them I was always at their house or they were calling me to come help them with some little thing they needed. Grandma had been suffering from alzheimers for quite some time. Some days were good ,some days were horrible. Both my grandparents were in their 90's and the whole family was trying to get my grandfather to let us get her in an assited living facility, no dice. When grandpa's body could no longer hold up and he became unable to function he agreed to a facility and both moved in. Grandpa held on for 6 days until he was sure grandma was gonna be taken care of and then he passed away. I still remember the last day, he asked me how grandma was and I said she was in the main hall talking to everyone, he said that was good and he told me goodbye, which was odd because I was'nt leaving. The next day at work I got the news that he had passed and I knew what he had meant. My grandma made it another month before she succumbed to that horrible disease. They missed their 70th anniversary by three months. Not a day goes by that they are not in my thoughts. Sorry for the ramblings, reading your story has just brought back a flood of memories and emotions.
