"SHOOT YOUR WAY ACROSS TEXAS"April 14-15-07"at "SALT GRASS"

This weekend Salt Grass >>>----.SPOT SHOOT
    (what is this SPOT SHOOT)

As the date quickly approaches for the first of two scheduled SYWAT tournaments for this year, we thought it might be a good idea to familiarize our 3-D shooting friends with the basic setup of a spot tournament.

There are 28 lanes, as opposed to 30 in 3-D, and you will shoot 4 arrows at each target for a total of 112 arrows.
The targets range in distance from 20 feet to 80 yards (240 feet), with the majority of targets in the 20-50 yard range. All targets are marked with the yardage, so no guessing or rangefinders are necessary.

Some targets will be white with black dots (field round) and some will be black with white dots (hunter round). There are four different sizes of targets, smaller targets for closer shots and bigger targets for the longer distances. You can score up to 20 points per target, with a perfect score for a round being 560.

Some targets have you shoot from the same spot all four times, some have you walk up closer for each of the four shots, and some have you move from left to right for each shot.

It is a fun and challenging game and can be shot at Salt Grass any time the 3-D course is not open. As in 3-D, it requires practice to be consistently good and it has the advantage of being available all the time. Many archers who shoot both spots (also known as field archery) and 3-D report that their 3-D scores improved as a result of shooting spots.

If you are new to the game and are worried about doing something wrong, we will group you with at least one experienced spot shooter. You will be able to ask questions if you are confused or unsure at any time. There will also be at least one TFAA (Texas Field Archery Association) rep at the shoot to help answer any questions you may have.

                SALT GRASS scores from SYWAT

                The pros were there!

The sign-up sheet looked like a who's who of Texas archery.

This past weekend showed some of the best scores ever posted at Salt Grass Archery Club. The weather, except for the wind on Saturday, was beautiful, the food was great and everyone looked to be having a good time.

                In the Pro
A-M-FS division, Michael Braden shot a near perfect 557 out of a possible 560!
That was incredible shooting, congratulations Michael!

Not far off the lead was Adam Guggisberg with a 550, which is another incredible score, especially considering the fact the Adam shot on Saturday and fought the wind all day. Way to go, Adam!

Georgianna Witt (A-F-FS) raised the bar for the ladies with an outstanding score of 542.
Jacki Taylor took second place in the A-F-FS division with a 505 and Salt Grass's Ashley Simmerman rounded out the top three in the division with a 481.

In the A-M-BHFS division there was quite a bit of competition as the top seven scores were all over 500:

                1) Jeff Schulz 530
                2) Nathan Taylor 525
                3) George Avouris 520
                4) Tom Parkinson 517
                5) Kevin Persinger 508
                6) Jack Simmerman 504
                7) Bob Cash 503

Congratulations to all of you, excellent shooting.

In the A-M-FS division there were several shooters who posted scores over 500 as well,

                1) Russell Payne 545
                2) Toby Ragsdale 536
                3) Kelly Kennedy 535
                4) Jason Groghan 532
                5) Kevin Glass 526

Also, Tom Parkinson and Larry Wafer both posted 500+ scores in S-M-FS, with Tom shooting 514 and Larry close behind with a 508.
LARRY WIN THE "SYWAT" Tom is from Idaho.(not T.F.A.A member)Sorry Tom.

Jake Tullis, YA-M-FS, shot a 510 to win his division as well.
                Congratulations Jake!
