Local legend around our parts, home town hero. . .

Jokes jokes, but he use to spend a lot of time at a childhood friends parents house on the river when I was growing up. Boy he can tell a story. Still kicking around doing taxidermy, heck the book is for sale at one of our local gas stations.

The book is well worth the $17 and even ordering a few more for Christmas gifts. poacher ? yes. did he pay for his crimes? yes . so don't sentence him again for telling his story after all its pretty dang good book the guy had talent and his brother mentioned it to him several times in the book .

I committed the sin of rewarding immorality and spent the $17 for the “book”- it’s really more like a high end magazine but cheaply printed. It’s got some interesting recounts of this guys’ crazy and dangerous exploits as a poacher of deer, Nalgai, antelope and exotics in south Texas, far west Texas, trans pecos, and the hill country. Whoever edited it either was under the influence or couldn’t pass a high school journalism class and is severely spelling challenged. Typo after typo.

That qualifier issued, its entertaining and confirms the extensive network of serious poacher networks there are in Texas. They are even loosely organized with monthly meetings and annual awards events! They have biblically rationalized their illegal antics in a “Robin Hood” vs the King- aka greedy elite ranch owners sort of attitude. Revenge for unfair system of private landowners limiting access for hunting “the people’s” wild game.

In the process, they apparently kill a lot more pedestrian / average bucks than Booners, at best caping them out and salvaging heads only in most cases. Also imply tie-in to local taxidermists in numerous cases in Texas.

Won’t give away more here in case you want to read it. If your conscience can abide it, as a lifelong hunter it’s a great expose of the dark side. This guy is no Daisy. He makes no effort to atone or apologize for youthful but sick episodes of vandalism, killing songbirds, wasting game/ meat, and theft. Suggest you not share with impressionable youngsters.

The copy I read was paper copied and stapled. I thought there was no way anyone would ever publish something like that... Guess I was wrong. The real accounts are wild, but I have to wander, how great could he have been if he would have just been a straight forward guide? For those who have read the published book, did it give names of any others who he "took in to hunt"? The rough draft listed a few.
Yes, he list real na.es of people who have died and a lot of first names of the other poachers.

There was an organized club that would hand out awards every year for the best deer poached.

I bought 3 copies. Stocking stuffers and I'm mailing one to a friend who knew him and whose family has property in Alice texas.

Keep in mind that back when he was poaching, a big deer was 170". There were no feeding programs going on then.

There’s always the vicarious thrill of seeing how the outlaw lives. I think that’s behind my curiosity as well.

This book only takes us through his first stint as an outlaw poacher. Apparently he reforms then relapses after a tough divorce and wrote a second book chronicalling that. Has anyone seen or read it?? I’m not sure it’s published yet but seems I saw it had just come out.

Bought it, read it, enjoyed it. I’ll also buy Part 2 when it gets published.

Editing could have been much better as grammar was not very good but good enough to understand and read. Only thing I didn’t care for too much in the book was the parts where they would kill numerous good bucks, cape them, take the horns, and then leave everything else just wasting entire deer.

Read the book and honestly allot is very hard to believe... grammar is horrible itís like reading a 100 page text message. I understand he changed his ways but the book is non stop bragging about breaking laws.

Itís entertaining for sure though and overall decent to kill some time

I sent the book the the first person on the list this week. I forgot to send it before I went on vacation.

Oddly enough i opened the mail box yesterday and thought the post office had sent the book back to me, but upon closer inspection that guy sent me another signed copy. Really weird, and I have no idea as to why he did. i was hoping it was part 2, but it is part one.

I thought there was a law against someone making profit from past crimes, like selling books detailing what they did. Maybe I'm thinking of a different state?

I'm intrigued and going to order the book. The lifestyle of a professional poacher has to be amazing. I would liken it to the lifestyle of a moonshiner.

there's really not much to poaching, if all you want is venison, not trophy heads. Bury a salt/mineral block, someplace that's miles from rancher or farmer salt blocks and offers a place to hang a snare horizontally, 6-7 ft in the air, depending upon the size of the deer, with an apple wired about a foot above the center of the cable loop. and where you have several trees in which you can put up a stand and a folding blind.

Some people go steal their salt blocks, as a matter of fact. Bait the burial with apples, carrots, etc, until you see signs of lots of deer use. Then they'll be back frequently for the salt. When you want venison, bait the site again. Be in the (covered) blind 2 hours before dawn, with a book to read, full camo, scent-control, and a little red light on the side of some eyeglasses. When you peak over the top-side of the blind at dawn, deer WILL be there.
