We've been trying to manage for 4x4's, western count, or 5 pts for you all down in Texas.
We have some 2x3's that need to go but they are too young yet for harvest.
Neither had much spread, 18 1/2 and 19 inches outside. Spouse's 3 pt was small bodied compared to mine but older. We don't get the huge bodied deer since we have no ag so to speak, just meadow grass.

We did get to watch about 12-20 deer in the yard every night.

We quit taking hunters about 3 years ago, now just LO and his family and us. He lets his great nephews hunt a bit and he takes an elk every year. They live out of state so we take care of the place, do the irrigating and have it to ourselves for about 10 months out of the year.

                Trapping starts about Thanksgiving.

Does Mule deer taste similar to whitetail?

It really depends on where they live and the habitat they are feeding in.
Personally, I like Whitetail better in most cases. Mule have a bit stronger wild taste to me.
But, a mule deer that is feeding on alfalfa and other crops during the season is pretty hard to beat.
