I think it's a dog tail going to the right. His head is turned in the pic. That's why you can't see the head on the left side.

OP, If he was chasing a "fawn" as you stated I believe his attack angle would be downward or straight forward. Not upward toward the tree.
Trust me I'm from E Tx we see lots of dogs on camera.

See the muzzle under dog 1, the leg you're seeing is the inside front right leg of dog 2.
