Quick and easy fly fishing pole protector

I’m trying to figure out fly fishing here in Montana and it’s a nuisance having to assemble and string the fly rod if I want to fish. I see the roof-top storage units on lots of vehicles, but I wanted something cheaper and kept under my Dodge’s topper.

Here’s what I came up with for under $10 (schedule 20, 2” pvc 10’ stick).

Marked and made 2 parallel cuts the width of my fly reel.

Heated the pvc with a propane torch and bent it up.

Slid-in rod and reel for a test fitting.

Removed rod, heated pvc until it softened, put in the rod/reel and formed the plastic around it. I had a couple minutes it remained pliable.

Trimmed off the excess to it’s easy to pry up to insert/ remove the rod and reel. Not shown cut the tube to length on both ends and rounded the corners.

Good rod storage idea, and low cost too. This nice project proves you come up with good answer to a problem, so Montana fly fishing is just another challenge for you to figure out. Sure would like to be trying to figure out fly fishing in beautiful Montana, good luck with that. Have fun and post up some pics of the Montana waters you are fishing.

                That's a $169 piece of PVC in today's market.

                Cool idea.
