    Oryx/Gemsbok: 270 or 308 enough?

I have both & feel confident with both guns, would you use these? I know bullet placement is a key factor & both are very accurate shooters.

Or should I consider a larger caliber like 300 WM or up to a 338?

    TIA

Either one will work fine. Use Barnes TSX or Nosler partition.

I shot mine with a 308, 180 grain powerpoint. The shot was thru the heart and he went 10 yards and dropped. At 60 yards i expected it to knock him over but he just flinched. They are tough and shot placement is everything.

Perfect choices, in Namibia we have killed hundreds. I love my 7 Rem Mag, but the Medium calibers with 270 and 30-06 being the majority are great too.

Good choice in calibers, use premium bullets.

Make sure you know where to place the shot and wait for that shot.

              Have a great hunt

Id take the 308 over the 270 any day anytime. But it all depends what your gun shoots too. If its a fater twist and only likes 155-168gr bullets... Id go bigger. 175s would be fine. All depends on bullet.

I’m leaning towards the 308 & going with a heavier bullet

Shot mine with a 280 rem and 160 Barnes TSX. No worries

I killed a Gemsbok the other day with a 25-06 with 115 gr Win Silver Tip. He ran about 80 yards . After seeing how thick the hide is I would opt for a bit more bullet weight next time.

Gem’s are much tougher then oryx so grouping them together for a caliber is a hard comparison in my opinion. A solid bullet should for either though with possibly going larger for the gems.

                        Just my opinion.

I shot mine with a 308 and he sucked it up like nothing. Ended up shooting 3 times, all good shots in the shoulder. Tough animal

Do you recall what grain bullet?

                              One animal. :-). Mountain lion/cougar.

                              Not a scimitar oryx.
