Magellan says initial estimates indicate around 1,200 barrels of crude oil, about 50,400 gallons, leaked. “Efforts are in progress to contain the crude oil release to minimize environmental impact and to ensure public safety,” Magellan said a statement.

A crude pipeline should've been clearly marked with signs, even if it's in the middle of nowhere.

Based on this he may not be that handy at it. Collectively I'd say he and his boss are million dollar men...... because they just cost their company in excess of that

Looks from the news story that this was a contractor working on Magellan's line. If so, they were probably looking for the line that they cut. 811 wouldn't have changed the outcome, whether called in or not. I'd be more concerned about a backhoe operator that can't tell the difference between a tree root and a steel pipe. Also, I've not seen lots of tree roots in pipeline ROWs. They usually get cleared and grubbed pretty well.

In the article referenced above, the Company that owned the pipeline said it was a contractor and they were doing maintenance on the system. If that is true then they had to know it was there!

I believe this pipeline along this stretch is 48". I find it hard to understand how a pipeline that size was mistaken for a tree root.
