Default Owl Creek Ranch

Iíve been following Jay/Dartonís Oklahoma threads for a couple years now, as Iím sure many of you have. One of his more recent threads (it started in 2019, time really moves fast) hooked me pretty good and I found myself checking it nearly every day for updates. Owning a small piece of property has always been a dream of mine but it was more of a 5+ year plan so Dartonís threads were supposed to fuel the ďdreamsĒ for awhile longer. However, about a year ago during our 9 year wedding anniversary weekend I convinced my lovely wife to tour Owl Creek Ranch with Darton, just to ďscratch the itchĒ. During our tour the unexpected happened and momma fell in love with the place. We tend to make up our minds pretty quickly, which found us under contract in November of Ď20 and closed in early February.

As is his typical style Darton had delivered a turnkey, ready to enjoy place that included a new 30x50 pole barn, newly installed water and electric, 2 food plots, and cleared access around the property. We made a few immediate necessary purchases to ensure we had a place to stay and year round transportation, then decided to make sure we actually utilized the property before investing in it too much further. I have since found myself there as often as possible, with a desire that only increases with each trip spent away from the madness that is DFW.

We have decided to convert the pole barn into living quarters, and are easing into the process now. I figure this is a process worthy of a DIY thread, even if I donít do every bit of the work myself. Iíve been in the residential construction industry for about 10 years but wouldnít claim to have actual building skills unless I somehow picked them up through osmosis. I anticipate this will be a prolonged documentation so youíll have to be patient regarding our updates. I also take criticism and opinions fairly well so feel free, as long as you donít try to talk me out of doing it. Weíre already beyond that option!

Dartonís original thread can be found here:

Another Oklahoma Dream In The Making! Owl Creek Ranch! It Could Be Yours!

If you find yourself looking for Oklahoma land, he is without a doubt THE MAN!

I was fortunate enough to be raised on a farm and taught the value of hard work. Iím confident that this property will help instill strong values and work ethic in our kids, and probably toughen momma up a bit too!

I drew up a floor plan a couple months ago as seen below. We will be replacing one overhead door with windows at the master bedroom and the other overhead door with a 9í slider. Cutting 2 additional windows in for natural light, one in master bath and one in the family area. We have a pond scheduled to dig sometime early next year which will be visible downhill from the family and master bedroom. A covered patio will be added off the family but Iím still deciding on size. The current barn has about a 50x15 overhang that I intend to enclose, add overhead end doors, and pour a slab on for storage.

Camp as it currently sits is plenty comfortable, and a few good meals have been shared. We also discovered a pretty legit pizza joint in Atoka that we hit up often. Campfires are extra special since my 4 year old did an impressive amount of heavy lifting to help me build a temp fire ring.

Emptying black water got old faster than expected. Fortunately my new BIL is in the septic business down in the RGV. He and a buddy hauled a tank up and we buried it behind the barn. It will serve the future build out and is currently working perfectly for our RV. They were paid in tequila and a couple large rocks that now reside about 12 hours further south than they belong.

I prefer to do my hunting from trees but this place is being outfitted with the young hunter in mind. With that, I shopped pretty hard for a primary ďkids blindĒ and ended up going with a Tank Blind. I will eventually get it up on a platform that a previous owner left behind, I just keep getting distracted doing other stuff like hunting the deer that there arenít any of in Ok. Donít ask me why but a group of us named the blind ďEl Borracho TacoĒ and it kind of stuck. Foresight maybe?

Weíre getting close to present day at which point the next updates will be less frequent. Just wanted to lay down a good foundation for everyone.

This is a hunting site and I have managed to do some hunting so far this year. I have laid down the law on a couple pigs of which there is no shortage. I also made what I thought to be a great shot on a nice buck I hadnít seen on camera. Unfortunately, hours/days of tracking and jumping him bedded down produced nothing more than quite a few restless nights thinking about what I had done wrong. Itís part of it though and I can only hope he survived. My target buck hasnít hit a camera in several weeks so Iím hoping heís safe and sound enjoying himself and not sitting in a taxidermistís shop waiting for his turn in line. I had a nice management 9pt under me at about 10-12yds Saturday morning that I most definitely should have arrowed, now that I look back on it. Heís still a regular though so we may meet again soon.

We recently decided to go ahead and get a few things underway this month/next so we can really get after the buildout early next year. I ordered windows and our slider door, which should all arrive sometime in December. Also went ahead and bought two commodes and both of my shower pans so I could test fit them to make sure I designed the bathrooms big enough. I met the lumber truck on site this past weekend to receive our preliminary order. Went ahead and did a little solo frame work in between hunts to get a head start and a feel for the room layout. That first wall section felt good going up! Me and a few buddies are headed up to get more framing done in two weeks with hopes of being framed and dried in by end of December. Thatís it for now, hope you follow along as we continue to enjoy!

We need to shoot a small pig and throw pieces of him on a pit, drink some cold beer and throw some salsa on the porky tacos that have that 4:am wake up call. It works down south we will make it work up north good times good thread. Te Amo Randall

Curious about the concrete slab on the pole barn... I'm not familiar with OK builds, but what do you do to convert that barn to living space if they didn't use a vapor barrier on the slab?

The slab is definitely my biggest uncertainty. I wish it was thicker, better reinforced, and had a barrier but it was designed to be a barn so it is what it is. We plan to stick with polished concrete and see how it performs. If we pull too much moisture I guess weíll have to go back and cap it then lay flooring.

We spent Thanksgiving in South Texas with family but came home Friday, which allowed Cooper and I the opportunity for a quick trip north this morning. We rarely have one on one meals so we stopped for breakfast in Celina on the way out. He helped me fill feeders and we did a couple hours of framing before heading home. It was another good time, just wish we couldíve stayed longer and gotten more done (as usual)!

Had some friends over to the house last night and had a little too much fun, which resulted in a pretty late departure this morning. It was my daughterís turn to join me otherwise I may have scrapped the trip altogether. We had a Braumís lunch, dropped off some material, installed a new solar Tactacam, and installed solar panels on my other two cameras. Did a little scouting for a new hunting spot and before we knew it we had to load up and head home! I expect to get some solid work in next weekend so should have a more productive build update to provide then.
