How many of you guys keep your hide for tanning?

Once tanned, what do you do with it? Do you keep the hair on or turn it to leather?

I kept my hide and will be having it tanned. It should be like 8 months before I get it back... So plenty of time to think of ideas. Right now I was thinking I should keep the hair on it and turn it into a rifle case. What do you guys do with a tanned hide?

I started tanning my hides with the hair on couple years ago. I'd like to eventually have them stitched together as a throw for the couch or some kind of bed spread. I've seen pillows that turned out really well using hair on axis hide.

I tan them myself or just remove the hair and make rawhide.

I self tan mine. Either hair on or off depending what I what it for. Have rugs, arrow quiver, as well as moccasins.

This. Can't imagine what I'd do with 5 deer hides, countless pig hides and the occasional exotic hides each year.
Although I guess I could become like Laramie (Sasquatch) and make my own clothes.

As a kid we could trade hides to a taxidermy guy for leather gloves and mittens, but that was in South Dakota

Mine go out with the guts unless it’s a good buck. To many deer hunters in the family can’t afford to tan all them hides.

Mine go in the gut pile but I would like to learn to tan the hides. Lots of stuff they could be used for.

If I manage to get it off a deer without cutting any holes in it I give it to my taxidermist.

I have only tanned my first whitetail many years ago. It is nailed to the wall at hunting camp. I have had only a few of my Axis hides tanned. I usually give them to the man who lets me hunt Axis on his land. He has them tanned and sells them. Good big Axis hides, with no holes( neck shot) are worth $200.

I am going to drop my hide off to be tanned and once I get it back, I want to make that rifle case I mentioned earlier...Anyone know how to make soft rifle cases?

Tails and some other sections I save to tie flies. A bucktail runs about $15

I have not visited this guy yet, but a buddy says he has been these with good reviews. North Texas Tannery located in Denton. $40 for a hide, $50 for a cape. Seems pretty good, but I've heard it's comically slow, so I'm expecting it to take about 8 months.

That really wouldn't bother me if I wanted a hide saved...do they want you to salt it & roll up frozen??

I'm really not sure of the correct hide saving / prep process??

This is where I get my hides tanned. I wish they had an express option even if they charged more. Sometimes I wonder if they are just waiting until they have a whole bunch and then have it done overseas or something. Wait time is absurd.

Well, mine has been in a freezer for about a month. I'm not sure of the process either, but I am pretty sure you're supposed to freeze until step 1, which to my understanding is thawing and then adding salt.

I plan on giving it to them frozen and letting them deal with it.

I tanned the hide from my daughter's first buck, she didnt know how she wanted to use it so I agreed to make her some throw pillows to decorate her room. Which reminds me I still need to make those pillows.

Definitely a long time to wait but the price is great. It would be cool to have a quiver made from the hide.

I was thinking a rifle sling as well from the same hide to match the rifle case.

I probably have 100 or more hides laying around. End tables, dressers, couches, rugs, pillow s, and gifts.

Just mail it to them frozen. Wait time is long but price is right.

I've had a bunch of deer and a few bear hides tanned at North Texas Tannery in Denton. Haven't done anything with them , they just hang on the backs of sofas and chairs around the house.

So I put a hide in my freezer 2 years ago. Any chance it’s still good?? I just skinned the deer, put a bunch of salt on it, and wrapped it tight in several trash bags.
