Actually, in whitetail deer, it has been pretty well proven that genetics play a very small role compared to nutrition. I'd be willing to bet the same is true of speckled trout.

Yeah not saying this Capt was fudging cuz I have no reason to believe otherwise but 100+ drum and only two trout ? By all accounts the drum, both black and red, fared better than trout by a whole lot.

That has more to do with the area he looked at than anything. I wouldn't expect to see trout in there this time of year much anyway.

Exactly. He was in chinquapin and went to lake Austin which is very shallow and pretty much only hold trout during the fall.

Redfish, drum, gar and catfish are pretty much the only fish there year round.

Harvest seasons, trophy trout genetics, release over 20, and what else? I’ve been working a bunch so I’ve missed out. I’m still abiding by tpwd limits. So until they tell me otherwise, I’ll take what I need. Bunch of those CPR fish die anyway. You can’t drag a fish back to the boat, flop it on the deck, measure it, post it to Instagram and Facebook then let it go and expect it to live. I’ve found a bunch of dead trophy trout floating that someone thought they were doing good releasing. The Social media reaction seems like a typical “woke” response.

Just make sure its in a basket type stringer and they will be just fine. Even if you have double your limit in there...gotta get those Instagram pics!

Especially if it was a long fight for the fish. Lactic acid develops in them just like us. It might slowly swim off but it could still die. Not to mention the removal of their slime coat.
I’ve literally fought some fish to death, mostly tuna and jack fish out of a kayak.

Not knocking the debate. Just figured this would be a good source of information on the fish kill. Does not appear to be.

My neighbor in Rockport reported more floaters today in the canal, mostly mullet. I'll be down tomorrow and intend to look around.

Yep my sources are saying fish (mostly trout) are starting to float more in Rockport area in addition to the known wash ups that were already noted in other reports earlier this week.

Here is a little Matagorda report for y'all.

I have not been out but I have spoken to some folks who were out today. A couple guys I know went and looked around West Matagorda Bay on our end of the bay today. They ran down the ICW west and looked in Culver's, Crab and Mad Island Lakes. Went out Mad Island cut, came back up the north shoreline to Twin Islands, cut across to the south shoreline and looped around. They saw lots of live redfish but they wouldn't eat. Saw lots of live mullet. They said the commercial drum fisherman was running his lines and had quite a few fish on the lines from what they could see. For the whole loop they made they saw 2 dead fish.

Game warden said he saw a few big trout floating in and around the ICW at Chinquapin. But not much else, no big numbers of dead trout yet. Another fella said he saw lots of dead black drum in east, which have already been turning up as well. I heard from another guy who fished the river, didn't see anything dead but didn't catch anything either.

I know some more guys who are fishing tomorrow, more reports to come. So far nothing really new. The reports have been pretty much the same. Big trout and drum took a hit. If there is more we should be seeing it soon. They are floating up everywhere else.

Surf is still good at PINS. I went yesterday and only saw dead fish for the first 5 miles or so. Those are supposedly washing out from packery. Tons of hard heads and puffer fish. Quite a few trout and snook as well.

Caught 4 slot drum 20 to 27 and a few oversized. 1 keeper red at 26 and 5 or 6 good whiting. Beautiful weather and a great day on the sand!
