So this buck was arrowed in November 23. On December 2 he shows up on camera. See passthrough wound. How is he still amount the living?

We spent several hours that night and half the following day looking for this buck. Zero blood trail. One of our members grandson shot him at 15 yards.

Yea, that one is puzzling. Don't see how if he was using anything other than a field tip that that hit would not have resulted in major blood loss and a direct hit through both lungs. That is in the middle of the "deadly V" it looks like to me.

My first thought was “he hit the bone and arrow deflected away from vitals”. Then I saw the second pic and I’m with you...not sure why he’s not dead. Seems like it should’ve been straight through the vitals.

How did the Broadhead look after? Seem that it opened, missing blades, anything that stood out? Possible dull blades I guess, but like most others said, a FP coulda killed him with that shot it seems. That's pretty bizarre to me also. Looks like a $ shot and dead deer 99.9% of the time

I shot a doe in exact same spot few weeks ago with a slick trick mag, watched her slowly walk and stand around for near ten min about 60yds away thinking she would fall any minute. Could see the blood stream down her leg on exit wound side. Got shot on video also. She dropped some so it was about 2-3” higher than I like but still should have done the job in theV. Never found her because of sparse blood. I think I got a pic of her later that week with appeared to be a wound in the correct spot. Toughcritters for sure.

At least he wasn't quartering to the shooter. That seems to cause quite a stink on here nowadays.
Must have been just a tad high. Good luck on another chance at him |

I hit one in the exact same place last year and he ran 500+ yards before he died. No blood. I got lucky. Took me over 3 hours to find him. I was 100% convinced he was dead..... Huge entry and exit. Spitfire 125 3 blade.
It went through the back lobe of both lungs, cutting gaping holes.. Even though I have killed 100's of critters with a bow and arrow that incident made me seriously question the killing efficiency of a BH.. I had a weak moment. |

Puzzling I would think that would be a kill shot no doubt. Only guess I can come up with is he had both legs outstretched in front of him and the hit was too far forward and went through that dreaded void. If it hit heart or lung at all he would be a dead deer.

I had the same thing happen with a hog, except 2 inches back. Showed up at another feeder, scabbed over, 2 days later.

We had one of our guys hit one a little higher this year. Nothing, no arrow , no blood, no hair. We have looked for him numerous times since then and nothing. Put out cameras where he hung out at nothing. Who knows?

Only thing I got is that he may have had his head down feeding when shot. When he heard the shot, his head may have gone almost between his two front legs while dipping to push off. This would have pushed his vitals way back, allowing the arrow to still go through both shoulders, but in front of the good stuff. Just a theory.

I shot a buck last year with a mechanical that didnt open and that deer died. Had pencil hole size entry and exit but still took out both lungs and basically just bled internally. Got lucky finding him because of hardly no blood trail.

As stated a field tip would have killed this deer. I shot a doe many, many years ago when Grim Reapers were still new to the market. Drilled her broad side at 25 yards. She made it less than 40 yards before piling up within sight. Upon inspection of the entry and exit hole it looked like I had shot her with a field tip. Just a 30cal. sized hole through and through. At first I assumed that the blades failed to open but when I recovered the arrow I noticed there were no blades. I did recover a blade where it had impacted as well as half if the collar that held them in place. I determined that the broadheads failure was more then likely due to operator error but it happened.
Personally, I think deer are just starting to evolve. They are just more resilient to being shot. We're just going to have to start using 10in cut broadheads or guillotines that lop their heads off like turkeys. RPGs are always another option... Seriously, sometimes shot are just hard to explain. |

Man, that shot is typically a 100% recovery. Wow. The only thing I can say is if the blades were dull, the wound would have coagulated quicker due to trauma, instead of a sharp blade wound which coagulates much slower if at all.

Never seen anything like that! Maybe a touch forward is all I can come up with but the entry and exits are pretty dang lethal in my book. Crazy! Hope yall can get him down!

Just about any species with lungs can survive with more than half of their lungs inoperable. My guess is dull blades rolled blood vessels out of the way and lung damage was limited to 1-2 maaaaaybe 3 lobes.
