As hard as it is for me to write this, my wife has talked me into letting go of my pride. As many of you know, my wife has been attacked by lupus pretty badly. It has now affected her heart. She has been told she has two valves that are allowing blood to flow back into her heart. While all this is going on we found out that we may be having to pay $3400 to the irs from last year's taxes because of the guy that filed them for us last year fat fingered one of the numbers. We have been swamped with medical bills that can't be paid because the money we have goes to keeping a roof over our heads and keeping the lights on. Our neighbors have been pitching in with groceries so that is a huge blessing. As I mentioned earlier this is so hard for me to ask but if you can help in any way I would greatly appreciate it. My hours have been cut due to covid causing us to bring in $1000 less a paycheck which has put us in the hole in our account for the past 8 months and we haven't been able to recover. Just spoke with H&R Block and they said we are held responsible for the 3400 to be paid back to the IRS even though it was their employees fault.

The IRS is extremely easy to work with setting up payment plans. You tell them what you can afford (as small as it may be) and they will work with you until you can get back to your normal hours... All it takes is a phone call.

Thank you for this advice. This is the first time I have had to deal with this and and I am very nervous. All of our money goes to keeping a roof over our heads and the lights and water on and we still end up in the hole. I just can't seem to get above water. I can't see a light at the end of this tunnel.

We have already filed for this year. That is how they found the mistake from last year. I will not be using them again.

I second the calling of the IRS , my CPA made a mistake when I sold my business . I called them and let them know it was being reworked and had no issues. I know someone that they locked all of his accounts and garnished his pay because he did not call and told them to pound sand.

Agree with calling IRS to set up a payment plan, been there.

You can also do that with medical bills.

I spent 14 yrs in the Army as a maintenance manager and working on apache helicopters. I currently work as a maintenance tech for a company contracted by Texas Instruments. I still have work just not as much as I was use to.

I believe you can make very small payments to the hospital and there is nothing they can do about it if you are making an effort. Also call the hospital and negotiate the price down. Usually they will.

IRS: call them and make arrangements. Don't bite off more than you can chew: if you can only send $20/month, tell them that. They are surprisingly agreeable if you reach out before they start taking action. About seventeen years ago I found myself owing them about $1600 and we set up a payment plan. I was pretty shocked at how well they were to work with.

Medical bills: go over every single scrap of paper with a fine-toothed comb. I read somewhere once that something like 89% of medical bills have errors in favor of the provider. I also know they will negotiate like street hustlers just to get some payment. A lot of medical bills just get ignored, so they'll take what you can afford.

Hope your wife is alright and things get better.

I’m praying for you and your wife. My father had the same ailment. Lupus with two valves with backflow issues.

As mentioned already, make those calls to the IRS and the hospital. Both will work with you on payments.

Has anyone ever been in the situation where your bank account goes into the negative for a couple of months? If so how did you recover from it without it affecting your credit? I am currently in this position and would appreciate any and all help provided. Thank you and God Bless.

Great advice! Medical bills can be paid with whatever you can afford. We went thru this with my moms medical bills after heart surgery. They need to work with you Sir! God Bless and you will some light at the end of the tunnel.

Been trying to call the irs and can't get a human on the phone because everything is directed towards this year's taxes. HR Block is saying to wait until I get a letter from the irs to set anything up.

Well hell I thought they already told you they owed it. I would just let it ride until you get back on your feet. If they haven't audited you or scheduled an audit, you have some time.

Might be a good time to sell that Champion boat to get above water too. With spring coming, folks will be looking a lot to buy boats now.

Earlier this year, our company put us on a rolling furlough schedule. I reached out to friends and family to offer service/labor at a really cheap rate. I was surprised how many people reached out to help. It was a win/win. They got work done around their house at a good price, and I made a few bucks to help me and my family out.

I have been making wood projects on the side to help with finances but sells have been slow.

If you have the ability to do so get the word out in your community and perform Handyman type work and be early to the job, do good work and be honest and you can make good $$$ I would think way better than wood work projects also look up Dave Ramsey and follow his baby steps and cut any and everything that you can cut out of your budget to help with expenses. We take a lot for granted and normally have a lot of fat to trim out of our budgets.

You asked for advice... so here it is.
Have you ever spoke or met with a financial planner? Make a budget that you can afford to live with and stick to it. You mentioned being in the hole for 8 months, yet you have post in the last few months talking about boats and vacations. Boats and vacations are nice, but you shouldn't be missing meals to pay for them. My advice, get with a financial planner and set priorities. Do not worry about the IRS thing until you actually get a notice from them, and then work out a payment plan with them.

I am very grateful for your advice and am currently set up to meet with a financial advisor. The vacations I referred to in Tennessee was all expenses paid, the boat is owned and the plan was to use a little of the tax return we thought we would be getting to accommodate any expenses for that and another vacation. Which is how we normally pay for small things of that nature.

God Bless everyone for your advice not matter how hard you think it may be. It is all good advice and is not going unheard one bit.
