Default South Texas Hunters 2018 Thread

This is the 7th annual thread. It's getting that time again to start doing some shed hunting and work around our places. Post your shed findings, rut reports, feed schedules, cheap corn prices, LPD'S or anything else pertaining to hunting in South Texas. This is also a thread were we can get info for people close to your place, and maybe we can lend a helping hand if needed.

I'm in Falfurrias off 285, and usually make about 6 to 8 trips a year to the ranch.

Last year was a bit of a down year for us on buck quality wise. A lot of bucks we had two years ago disappeared and didnít show up last year.

I live in South Texas just outside of La Pryor near the Hwy 57 and 83 junction. If anyone is ever in need of help, let me know. It is nice and green around here and deer are loving the forage. Last year was a good year on our ranch but I am really looking forward to this yearís bucks. We had a lot of 4.5 and 5.5 year olds that hopefully will be back bigger than ever. Best corn prices around here are at Oasis in Uvalde usually around 5.95 for a 50# bag.

Iím in Hidalgo county, lease was not too good this past year. Took one cull buck early season and once the rut hit my young bucks disappeared and never came back, most likely have been shot. Didnít have really any mature Deer come through except for one 5+ year old 8 point and it was at night. Already getting the lease setup better for next year, all feeders are topped off and we added 200 gallons of water tanks putting us at over 350 gallons total. I plan to get the cotton seed feeders filled this weekend then I will let the place go quiet while i go and catch some fish!!

We got .95Ēs of rain this morning just west of Freer. Most rain we have gotten in a while. That should kick start the spring growth.

Killed two rattlers two weeks ago in the evening while making some rounds at the lease. Also just put out 2700 pounds of cotton seed this past weekend. Will be going back to the lease this weekend if time permits to clean up senderos and get some more ground blinds built.

We got this from willamar cotton gin in raymondville. About 10 minutes from our house and only 15-20 from the lease so itís really convenient. Total was 2700 pounds for 260 dollars.

On a new place just SW of Laredo in Webb County this year. Place needs a lot of work but has a lot of potential. Going by game cam pics from guys from last year it's a haven for mature 8s. But talking to the lease manager they are going to get aggressive with them this year. We'll find out more after September when we get the survey. Got a dozer coming into clear roads and senderos next month. So I'm kind of exited. I really enjoy the work involved in improving a place. Headed out there in the morning to do some work at camp and maybe a little bass fishing in one of the tanks. Weather should be great.

We hunt outside of Raymondville north of 186. Ranch looks good this year. Quail population seems to be up based off of all the calls i've been hearing while turkey hunting. Been seeing more nilgai on our place as numbers were down a bunch this past year as well. We just need some dang rain.

Also, will be doing some hunting on the El Sauz this year!

I was at my place outside of Tilden this past weekend. Still some green but starting to burn up pretty quickly. Deer are starting to hit the feed pretty regularly again.

I was down last weekend and it was very dry. All our water holes were bone dry. I ended up shooting a nice sized hog and saw some deer but they just started to show horn growth.

I'll be down in Webb county in a couple weeks doing some dozer work but according to farm logs we got about a tenth of an inch last night. Hopefully in ran off in our tanks. It's starting to get a little dry out there.

The past three years have been a roller coaster of leases to say the least. Got off the place in Hebbronville two years back to hunt closer to home in Refigio county. Great place with a great group of of guys over there. Only to get pushed out by the wind mill company's.

So, came across a place in Laredo that was high fenced but no real management plan in place. But this year the lease manager is getting serious with the place and we're gonna give it a few years of some type of management direction and see what comes of it. It's got great potential so we will just have to see what comes of it.

Went out this past weekend to the lease, 1500 pounds of corn put in feeders and 300 gallons of water put out. The deer are hitting the cotton seed hard and I already have bucks on camera showing decent growth.

2.1" of rain last week. We needed it.......badly. Hopefully it keeps raining long enough to get grass growing and not burn up!

Same here. The deer are barely touching the cotton seed and Protien consumption has gone way done. Iím guessing with the heat wave we are about to go through, they will be back on feed before long.

Spent a couple days at the lease earlier this week. Tried to get some good people on some javis and hogs. Couldn't get it done. Boy was it hot though. We are in desperate need of rain. Tanks are drying up quickly. Did see what looks to be a couple up and comers. Some does have dropped fawns but still plenty that haven't but are fixing to blow any day now.

Still praying for rain.

I just got back today and the place was greenish but starting to dry up from lack of rain. The ponds were still full but we need more rain soon. Itís amazing what a good 6 inches of rain will do for a place.

Anyone have any trail cam pics?

All my camera memory cards were full so I had not pictures later than late May. I did see one nice buck as I was filling feeders but other than that it was a million degrees out.

Anyone have any luck with repainting fiberglass deer blinds with a paint that holds up longer than 2 years?

I have an all seasons that hasnít faded on bit but it looks like it may have some kind of bedliner sprayed on it. My other fiberglass blinds are more like the Dillon blinds and tend to fade.

I actually bought some green paint from Wally World, I cant remember the brand but I got the high gloss and it has held up surprisingly well. It has been on 3 years and it still looks good.

We dug a bigger pond this year so hopefully it brings in more birds.
