              looks small enough to be a "drill string" for trenchless drilling (like drilling under a roadway for water lines, etc.)

                    That is what is attached to a pump jack and goes down to the pump on some oil wells.

                      5/8 sucker rods, they are generally used to pump saltwater out of a well.
                      Depending on condition and your area they are worth $1.00 to maybe $5.00 each.

                        They are sucker rods used on a traveling/standing valve type oil well pump. They sit under the polished rod, which is what you actually see above ground.
