One of my bucket list goals was to buy some property and have my son shoot his first deer on it. He managed to get his first deer two years ago on a friend’s place and followed up with a few more.
This summer he told me he wanted to shoot a deer with a bow this season so we visited Rick Erdmann at West Houston archery and upgraded his archery gear. It didn’t look too good the first few months of practicing, but he has come around recently.
On October 1st we were blessed with the opportunity to close on 230ac in Medina county. The wildlife are plentiful and uneducated, the perfect combination for a new bowhunter. With a strict 10yd limit he spent the first few weekends hunting pigs and turkey.
Last trip I turned him loose on deer with a 5yd limit under my supervision. After three frustrating sits full of close calls he went home empty handed.
This morning I gave him the option to take the rifle, but he declined. Just after first light he came to full draw on a doe only to have the arrow deflect off a carbon support rod on the popup. After coming to full draw 6 more times and letting down on various deer, this buck cooperated at around 4yds.
After such a difficult year for so many people, God continues to pour out his blessing on my family. We certainly don’t deserve it, but are very great full.
