Tore mine a few years ago. 6 month rehab, so hope that’s not it... can you flex your calf ( can you move your foot foward, like pushing on a gas pedal)?

barely. doc had me to try and stand on my tip toes, not happening. one ankle you could really feel the ridge of the tendon, on the hurt one nothing.

I tore mine fully back in 2008. I would suggest you see a specialist right away. When I first hurt mine it was only a partial tear. I went to the emergency room and they told me it was a bad sprain. I kept working with it and it was feeling better. two weeks later I lost my footing and put all my weight on the leg and snap it was gone. With a partial tear the surgery is not as bad. They can re-attach the portions of the tendon that have pulled loose. With a full tear as I ended up with, they cut you from the heal to mid calf. There is not enough tendon to re-attach so they us cadaver tendon make up the difference. Needless to say it's never the same, even with lots of physical therapy. I wish you the best. IM me with your cell number. I can tell you all I know.

Does my dog count? It was 60% torn, not completely severed. Went to surgery and they reattached it with non absorbing sutures. Had pins placed in the bone to keep the tendon from flexing for 2 months. After pins were removed she wouldn’t bear weight on it for 2 weeks. At 3 months post surgery she is walking, trotting and running short distances but with a limp. The surgeon said the injured leg might be a little shorter than the other and that does seem to be the case.
From all the research I did it sounds like Achilles’ tendon repair has a pretty high success rate with most patients returning to normal activity within a year. Some can even play sports again. I had a couple vets talk to me about stem cell therapy for tendon regeneration but I didn’t pursue it.

completely ruptured mine playing basketball when I was 28. went 6 weeks w/out surgery b/c I didn't want to miss jan/feb trout fishing!!! (yeah, I wadefished w/a torn Achilles!!!, just dumb) a long recovery, several castings, and very painful if you get behind on your pain killers, I've never felt pain like that..

good luck, find the best surgeon you can.

I tore mine in 2015. Do NOT get surgery. One more time do NOT get surgery.

Unless you lacerate the sleeve your achilles tendon travels through it is not necessary. Most doctors you call will tell you to get surgery but call around until you find one who will do a non surgical treatment.

The non-surgical route will put you in a cast with a wedge built into it that will force your toe to stay pointed causing your achilles to relax and push the ruptured ends back together. Over time they will reconnect and you will be fine. You will also be walking out of the office that day on the cast with the wedge vs a week+ being down with the surgery.

Here is a paper to read LINK

I can't find the full paper but here is the study by my doctor and several others. LINK

It took me 6 month to recover but after that no issues and no surgical scars. I would call sports medicine hospitals near Dallas until you find a doctor that does the non-surgical route. My doctor recently retired and was down here in Houston.

If you have more questions feel free to ask. Its sad our medical system jumps to surgery for issues that can be healed otherwise.

Good luck. If he/she dismisses it or doesn't know anything about it keep calling doctors. I took me 3 different doctors and I had a surgical appointment the next day with 1 before I found out about the non-surgical option.
